Bios no longer detects the harddrive

Is it set to run disc or hard drive 1st?
if reinstalling windows it needs to boot up from cd drive 1st and this will automatic copy to new garden drive, after that change bios to boot up from hard drive.

Dell latitude d600 setup screen

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

Hard drive door unscrewed and hard drive was hanging... Now this screen?

This is a network PXE boot screen. This is usually the last boot device it will try if it doesn't detect a HDD or cd/dvd drive with bootable media. You should be able to see a hard drive in bios, if not replce it and re-install your operating system.

I have a acer aspire 3684NWXMi series with a 80 GB hard disk drive and want to upgrade to the 320 - 500 GB do I have to buy a certain make or brand for it to work in my laptop?

According to this review there is no optical drive, (CD/DVD drive),

http://www.naaptol.com/laptops/acer-aspire-3684nwxmi/P/779.html

The new harddrive is blank. No Operating System on it.

No Windows.

After a person installs a new harddrive, the basic procedure is to use the Restoration Disk, and when asked choose Full Install.
(Destructive Installation)

No optical drive.

[No Restoration Disk is NO problem. Contact HP Support.
In the US it is $17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
Have more info for US, and other countries if you need it ]

This means you will go through some 'changes', if no optical drive.
More than I believe you may wish to take on.
(Don't want to overstep myself, or seem rude)

The next thing is there may be a harddrive limit.
Might be capped at 135GB, and not allow a 300, or 500GB harddrive.
If this holds true the harddrive is then partitioned;

300GB harddrive;
Partitioned into 3 partitions, of 100GB each; or 4 partitions of 75GB each.

500GB harddrive;
Partitioned into 4 partitions of 125GB each.

Fools BIOS into thinking there is just a 75GB, or 100GB, or 125GB harddrive; instead of a 300GB, or 500GB unit.

Yes. More headache if you may not be adept.

I suggest using an external harddrive instead.

Just my thoughts,
Regards,

My hard drive in my 1545 inspiron is shot. I am getting a code of 2000-0146, a harddrive error. should I reinststall the OS and start over or do I need to buy a new harddrive. I can't even run safe...

If you can get to your BIOS settings, change the hard drive settings from SATA to AHCI SATA and see if does anything for you. If not, then the hard drive needs to be replaced. Any 2.5" SATA drive will work. You will need to re install your OS, drivers, and all when or if a new drive is installed. If you have a back up CD it shouldn't be hard, but you are going to loose any data that you had saved.

Why does my laptop say system operator missing

System operating missing means that your laptop cannot find a operating system to start. This could be that your hard drive have crashed or overheated or the laptop is not detecting your harddrive. You might want to go into your bios menu and see if the bios is detecting your harddrive, and if it is not, it could be that your hard drive is bad. The only way to test this out is to take your harddrive and connect it to another computer to see if it is working. If it is working then there could be a loose connection between the hard drive and the laptop. If the bios detect your harddrive, then that means your operating system is currupted and needs to be fix or reinstall.

Hard drive crash, not usable at all; downloaded xp drivers and computer drivers but cannot get them installed. Hard drive not recognized.

When you install a new harddrive, it has no Operating System on it.
Windows XP and Windows Vista, are examples of an Operating System.

Each laptop manufacturer, has their own system of changing a laptop harddrive. Some allow you to press a key or two, to put the laptop in a state where it will save the basic Operating System files, and when you install the new harddrive, it will transfer them over to it.

Some laptop manufacturers do have this option.

You either have to take the harddrive out, install it into an external enclosure for a harddrive, (Uses a USB cable) Then attach the external enclosure via the USB cable, to another computer, and use a 'mirror' imaging program to save the Operating System to that computer.

Then the new harddrive is installed in that external enclosure, and the Operating System is 'mirrored' over to it.

Just information for you, as you cannot do this now with a crashed harddrive.
Your option now, is to buy a genuine copy of the Operating System you had on the laptop, and install it.
Not what you wanted to hear, huh?

You need to buy whatever version of Windows XP it had, (WinXP Home or WinXP Pro), or Windows Vista.
If it was Windows Vista, I suggest getting at least the Windows Vista Home Premium version.

I personally prefer Xp over Vista.
Tigerdirect.com, and Newegg.com, have these.
Look for Software>Operating Systems.

OR, you can simply put Ubuntu Linux on it for free.

Installation problem

It means the install cannot see or detect the hard disk and is caused by :-
Incorrect BIOS setting for the hard drive.
or
A faulty hard drive.
or
The hard drive is not seated correctly on the hard drive connector.

Test the hard drive in another laptop or attach the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port, if it see the drive as an external drive and you can copy and delete files to this drive then it is OK and the fault is with the laptop.
