Your TV is going into protective shutdown. Usually from a small part malfunctioning such as a diode or transistor. But you would need the service manual to actually diagnose this

you will have to go into the service manual and check the start up voltages as they enter the set. The manual will show you which components to check for standby power and start up voltages.

Says it is overheated and cuts off after only a few minutes.

Have you cleaned the TV? It's recommended that every 6 months you need to clean the TV remove all the dust inside because it can block the air flow and cause the TV to overheat. Please check that first. Also check if the cooling fans are working properly.

50p8341 on-screen menu

I called the Philips help number (1-888-PHILIPS) and the tech had me turn off the tv and then unplug it from the outlet, wait 1 minute, then plug it back into the outlet, then turn the tv back on. It reset the menu memory and it is now back in the middle of the screen where it belongs.

If the picture is changing size when bright images appear on screen, then a power regulator issue is what you have. Have a technician look at it.
