Black screen Screen goes black after about 2 seconds,if I put in hibernate mode for a while and then disable I will have regular screen for about 2 minutes then goes black again.I have not spilled anything onto laptop, but this problem seemed to start after burning some songs to cd.I have read about a possible burned capacitor,or bad inverter,a vista program bug.I took the memory compartment door off and looked inside, but I do not see anything loose or burned out.Computer had basic warranty of 12 months, and this happened on 13th month...dummy me !!

First check well that is not a windows bug. To do so try starting computer in safe mode and do system restore, or do a backup of your files and do a complete recovery if you can. If it is not a system problem then it must be one of following.

Remove battery and disconnect laptop from outlet. Connect it back to outlet with no battery in and check, if it works, then it was the battery.

Then start the computer in bios and leave the laptop on with bios page for one hour or so. If it turns off then it is probably an overheating problem related to malfunction of CPU fan. In this case the fan must be replaced.

If none of the above then most possible cause is a faulty motherboard, in this case you will need to find a spare laptop or motherboard of the same kind (check ebay).

You may check power settings in control panel and see if somehow the
settings for your screen are set to turn off or the power settings
program has been corrupted for some reasons.

    problems may be
    1 Device driver problems

    2.Device interrupt request/DMA/ I/O address conflicts

    3. Graphics problems

all these can result in randoim shutdown of a PC BUT all can be resolved using device manager.

Sony VAIO VCG-FE770g, turns on automatically after pressing Hybernate or turn-off

Go into power option, select hibernate, uncheck box to the left to disable hibernate, this will free up disc space and get rid of the problem. If that is not an option do a system restore before the update

My display screen goes on and off

I find sleep mode nothing but trouble, eventually corrupts window files over extended use, go into power options, go to stand by and select never and click apply, next go to hibernate "top right" and click, make sure the check box is clear, if not! remove check and click apply and restart your laptop.

I have an E series lifebook. The laptop just got wiped clean because it had a bad virus. I took it to a professional tech and he did the work and also updated windows. the computer was working fine prior...

You can turn Sleep and Hibernate off in Windows but this sounds like it might be your Bios putting the system to sleep. In windows go to power options and turn sleep and Hibernation off but double check your Bios as well for a possible setting there that will put the computer in sleep or Hibernate mode.

Black screen w/blinking cursor

So.. you can select safe mode? Or you turn it on and it is resuming into the blank screen?

If the latter. Unplug the power, pull the battery out for 20 seconds or so. Then put it all back together and try booting up.

Aspire one with windows XP. Won't turn back on while in sleep mod

I've had spotty luck with Windows and sleep or hibernate modes. I would suggest just disabling sleep/hibernate mode. The options can be found under the control panel under power options. While turning off the sleep mode won't help your battery life, if you ask me, it beats having to power off the laptop by pulling the battery out. If you don't want to turn it off, you can try adjusting the amount of time it lets pass before it goes to slee.

Cannot start Sony VAIO PCG-5J2L /Goes to black screen only

During start-up the computer will go to a black screen for awhile and then the pointer arrow will show alone, and then the system will come up.

If you think it's a hibernation problem, pull the ac plug and battery out for about 1 hour and then plug back in.

If this didn't work, then try the F8 Key and choose "Last Know Good Configuration".

Laptop screen turns black

In Windows XP you can disable hibernation by doing the following:
1. Open Power Options in Control Panel
2. Select the Hibernate tab
3. Clear the checkbox for enabling hibernation
This doesn't work in Vista however because the GUI for Power Options has changed and doesn't offer the ability to disable hibernation. But you can disable hiberation in Vista from the command line if you use admin privileges. Here's how:
1. Press the WINDOWS key and type cmd into the Start Search box but *don't* press ENTER
2. Right-click on cmd in the Programs list and select Run As Administrator
3. Click Continue when the UAC prompt appears
4. Type powercfg -h off and press ENTER

IF this does not help write back.
