Question about Compaq Presario V2401CL Notebook

1 Answer

All USB ports are inoperable

My USB ports are dead (per say). Power goes through them but any device I plug in is unrecognized. Worst, my Presario freezes (locks up) when I insert a Flash drive. I've tried about 25 different solutions posted over 40 forum websites and no joy. Device Manager lives in Nirvana because it always tells me that my ports are OK. I need to know if my particular problem has been seen before. Further, I'm talking about ANY USB device so it is not an issue with a camera or an MP3 player or mouse/keyboard combo. I have flashed my Bios twice and loaded the latest chip drivers and updates and still no Joy. One solution is to toggle the Legacy/High Speed selection in the Bios but guess what folks, my award/Phoenix bios doesn't even have a section on USB devices (?????). I need to see if there's a solution before I re-load Winders' or dish out coin on a new motherboard.

I thought of this and I'm in the process of opening the notebook but my puzzlement is this, why is all ports affected the same way? I mean all 3 ports are located on a different place on the notebook but they all reports the same error or freez.

Yes, I finally got the Knoppix (a Linux variant) to load up from a CD and not being familiar with the OS, I can't dig and get specifics but on the surface, I would say it's hardware problem as none of my USB ports were workin. That is, they are somewhat reported but nothing happens when I plug in a USB dev. There is one last scrap of proof and that is I plugged in a PCMCIA USB 2.0 hub and flash drives and rodents work. On the Compaq/HP technical manual, they describe a USB/S-Video controller board and I've been trying to get an answer from HP to see if I just need to replace this item or the whole M/B. Lastly, if the problem is in my bios, why doesn't the USB section exist?

    Yes!

  • MrFrustrated Mar 11, 2008

The malfunction would then be in the hardware or windows because the all of the USB devices I've tried work perfectly on other computers. Again, Device Man reports all is well. No yellow exclamation bullets. All of the USB items (controllers and roothubs etc.)report ok. no conflicts on IRQ's and like I said, as far as the bios, there is almost no information or selections available. I mean no IRQ's, no USB legacy or High speed toggle and as far as power managment (ACPI) etc, there's only one selection and that is on or off. I'ved triple checked with HP and they tell me that the bios flash posted on their support D/L is the latest. for a 2 year ols notebook, I'm surprised Award/Phoenix put out a simple BIOS access to my notebook.

Yes thank you. I know this is one of my last options but not having a USB port available to backup my HD (and I don't have time to back up 120 gigs to CD/DVD) I'm reluctant because I'm going to loose a lot of data. Is there a way to re-load the system but not loose any of my profiles and settings, I mean without backing things up due to lack of USB port?

Thank you, I just remembered I have a spare 40GB notebook drive and I'll load WinXP on it and see if the ports work, if not, then I'd better save up for a new M/B. Thanx again and signing off.

Check Device Manager to be certain that the root hub is
functioning correctly. If the root hub is displayed with an exclamation point
(!) in a yellow circle, verify that the BIOS is assigning an interrupt request
(IRQ) to the root USB controller. This is required for the device driver to be
    loaded.

Laptop not recognizing device when plugged into laptop how to fix

The computer is not recognizing the device because the appropriate software or driver is not installed on the device.

Most of the time when you connect a smartphone into a compatible laptop the device drivers or software automatically install, so the laptop may recognize the smartphone.

Here are some possibilities as to why the device is not recognized.

1) The USB port is bad.
2) The USB port is not activated
3) One of the devices does not support the other

Here are a few possible troubleshooting solutions:

1) Go to the smartphone manufactures website and download and install the updated device driver and software then plug in the device to see if it is recognized.
2) (if Windows OS) Go to the Device Manager to see if the device is showing up when it's plugged in. If you see the device in device manager right click the device and choose to update the driver.
3) (if Windows OS) Additionally, in device manager you can check your device's USB ports to see if there is an issue with the ports that may be resulting in the smartphone not being recognized. You can choose to re-enable the USB ports or update the software for the USB ports.

Hopes that helps resolve your issues.

The usb ports on my v2000 no longer work. When I plug in any usb device it is not recognized.

Try reinstalling the usb drivers for your computer. You can also check to see if its a hardware issue by pluging a usb powered device like a cooling pad in the usb port. If it gets power, chances are its a software issue. If no, then its a hardware issue.

I bought a multmedia keyboard how do i attacch it

Your keyboard is USB equipped?

Your laptop has a USB port?

Connect em

Your keyboard has the standard mini plug?

Your laptop has a mini port in the back?

Connect em

If one is one and the other is the other ... I thnk you are out of luck.

If yo are already using your USB port, you can daisy-chain USB devices up to 128 devices (though you would require additional power for that many, probably)

I hope this helps you

USB PORTS

does your usb mem stick have any light indicators? if yes , whenever you put you usb stick, does it light? if it lights are USB ports is still ok,  You just have to reformat or partition you USB stick.
(you can also try other devices like usb mouse or any usb devices that lights up when you connect it)

if there are no lights if you plug, or no indication that a power goes to your stick, its possible that your usb your are busted. if this is the case, if your laptop has a PCMIA slot, you can find a pcmia USB card, if you dont have. your only option is replace the  motherboard.

Does 1 Usb port work on your computer? Sometimes they can go out. Do you have a USB hub you can use?

Usb won't work

Hi, its because the usb ports have not enough power to, power on the device completely. Can you comfirm the unrecognized devices are plugged directly into the laptop and not into a usb hub, also if you go into control panel and into device manager, look up the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, Go into USB ROOT Hub for each one and into properties for them, Power Management and make sure there are no ticks.

Have a nice christmas

Compaq Presario v2000 w/ dead USB ports

I have the same problem with my Compaq Presario V2000. Lost both USB ports and HP tells me that the motherboard has to be replaced at $300 +..I searched and found a PCMCIA card with two USB ports for $10. No problems with the USB ports on this card..great and cheap solution.
My belief is that the compaq usb ports do not have power limiting circuitry therefore allowing you to overload the output power on the ports. My ports failed after I downloaded into a burglar alarm system I was programming.

Dead USB Ports...

Have you checked drivers not only for the usb, but for the chipset of the system itself. Also, have you installed service pack 2?

Might also just visually inspect for troublesome fingers in the ports themselves; often get bent and short out.

Good luck

I would suggest returning to retailer as it's under warranty still if only 6 months old, also changing motherboard is not a job for us mere mortals.
