Starting with an empty camera. I put an SD card in, then fitted fully charged Ni Mh batteries ( this has been tried with lithium ion and Mallory cells too).
The camera was switched on in (setup mode), the screen lights up (coolpix opening image), the lens stays in, no controls work and the camera won't switch off. I remove the batteries and the green light naturally goes out.
I did the same procedure in Scene mode. Similar happened, but the difference was that the lens went out of the body as normal. Still nothing else worked and when I took the batteries out the lens did not retract.
I then re shut the battery compartment door and the lens immediately retracted.
I turn on again and we go through the same cycle from the top of this page.
The last operation with the camera was to download to the computer, but after decoupling from the computer lead, I switched the camera on again, re formatted the card, turned the camera off and removed and replaced the card with a different card.
