Yes the compressor is working. There is no ice in the freezer section.

  • Reggie25 Mar 15, 2008

Thanks for your help. Just to let you know, this refrigerator is a nofrost model. The freezer compartment is keeping food chilled with no frost/ice build up.

If the compressor is running and not cooling then there is no refrigerant circulating in the refrigerator or no air moving across the one or both coils. No ice in the freezer section indicates that no cooling is taking place at all, pointing to a lack of refrigerant rather than poor air circulation due to a bad fan or frozen coil.
You can try a manual defrost to ensure it's not a frozen coil by unplugging the unit for several hours with doors open then starting it again. If there is still no cooling occurring you need to check the refrigerant level. If its low you will have to find and seal the leak, pressure test with nitrogen, evacuate and weigh in the correct amount and type of refrigerant listed on the unit.
Hope this helps, needless to say be sure to find a reputable qualified technician to open and service your refrigerant circuit this will make or break your unit.

    Hi Reggie25
If the compressor is running continuously, It would still suggest low refrigerant level or possibly the cold air circulating fan is not moving air into the refrigerator section however I would expect to see ice building up in the freezer section if the circulating fan is not working.
However if the compressor is cycling on and of, (just not at the desired temperatures) then you will need to replace the thermostat.

Sounds like a defrost problem, is there ice on the back wall of the freezer? If so the defrost system has failed. The most common repair is a Part# 67004757 defrost thermostat and adaptive defrost board Part# 67004704. Even with the parts in your hand, you will need to de-ice the freezer to replace the thermostat in the freezer section, then unplug unit to replace the adaptive defrost board located in the controls of the refrigerator section. Normally it can take about an hour to complete.
Good Luck

I have an Amana fridge/freezer which is freezing only at the bottom of the freezer and also in the bottom of the fridge however the rest of the fridge and freezer are only just cool. The fridge is...

It is important to shut off the fridge for few hours so that the system cools down and the compressor resets. Now check the thermostat settings, check also the position of the freezer settings.
After the fridge is switched on , if there are no issues then the auto frost timer can be a suspect. If not the thermostat must be checked. check if frost has build up to prevent cooling.

Freezer works refrigerator is warm

If the freezer is getting cold and working properly, but fridge section is not getting cold, then it can be defrost issue.------------------ The procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located.--------- Try manual defrost reset procedure: ---- First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. If the same problem occurs then it's defrost problem. The defrost board and the defrost thermostat/heater is not functioning properly and it has to be checked and replaced. The defrost assembly consists of three main parts. The defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and defrost board. Any of the one is not functioning. When thermostat sense the maximum cooling, it triggers the defrost heater to start heating and this defrosts the ice collected on the coils and the system works. Both thermostat and heater are controlled by defrost board. First the thermostat and defrost heater to be checked, if both check ok by meter and visually, then its defrost board causing the problem. Refrigerator & Frrezer doesn't cool properly

Top of Form

If there is no cooling at all , before we go further we must confirm the first step of confirming the compressor and gas pressure. So shut off the fridge and leave it off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge. If there is no ice formation we have a big issue as the compressor and gas must be checked out. If compressor is running check the pressure, get help to test gas pressure. If not you will need to fill up ,If gas pressure is good the possibility of the compressor being inefficient is high. In such a case you must take consensus to estimate and decide, if RPM of motor is low check capacitor.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
So try this test from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Ref/freezer not cold , even at coldest setting. Seems bottom oo fridge/frrezer colder than the top.

I have had a similar experience. Ice may accumulate inside the cabinet, adjacent to the thermostat, even on "frost-free" models. This can be especially troublesome if your home or climate isespecially humid. The ice tricks the thermostat into thinking everythingis cold enough, so the cooling unit simply does not turn on, and when it does come on it only refreshes the ice. Your first thought may be to defrost the fridge. You will have to empty the fridge, then leave it unplugged for a day or two. Be prepared for the melt water, it may run out of the cabinet and flow onto your floor. If this does not help, you will probably want to call a service tech, as fridges do wear out. But do your homework, new refridgerators have come way down in price, and there are incentives in many jurisdictions to encourage you to replace older units with newer, more efficient units. You may find it is a better idea to purchase a new one. I hope that this is helpful, Rob.

Why does the fridge part of my zanussi freezone fridge/freezer, keep freezing the food?

Hi,the problem you are encountering is as a result of the fact that the thermostat which regulates the cooling temperature in the fridge/freezer is bad hence there is no regulation of the cooling temperature in the fridge/freezer section, hence the food in the fridge freezes up.

The solution is to replace the thermostat of the unit,here is how you go about it;

1.You have to disconnect the fridge from the power source.
2.Locate the thermostat at the bottom of the unit,at the top left corner above the condenser.
3.Now you need to locate the wire ends or wire harness and unplug them.
4.Replace the thermostat, reconnect it back, put the back cover back and you have completed the job.

Fridge and freezer same temp.

First of all, there is only one thing that cools in a fridge and that is the freezer. The fresh food section is cooled by air forced into it from the freezer.
  • You ice maker will not work if the temp inside the freezer is above 5 degrees. It has a thermostat inside it that enables it.
  • The knob that turns the fridge off and on is the thermostat for the freezer.
  • The other knob opens and closes a damper between the freezer and fresh food section.
  • There is a fan that should be running that pulls air from the freezer into the fresh food section.
(The factory does make the discription of the knobs confussing)

Now. turn one of the knobs all the way one way and then the next. If it turns the compressor off, it's the thermostat. If it does not, try the other knob. Once you find the thermostat, set it in the middle of the scale. Now place the other knob the same. Check and see if you can either feel or hear the inside fan running. If so lets go to the back. This is where your compressor is. It is under the fridge and also has a fan that blows on it. You will need to remove the back bottom panel. See if you can tell if the fan is running. Also notice if the fan is blowing into a set if coils. You should also be able to fill the compressor, if it's hot, it's running. If these two are running, and you didn't see a coil at the fan. Take the front kick panel off the fridge and clean the coil that's under the fridge. If it's dirty, give the fridge a couple hours and see if it cools down. If so, this was your problem. If both knobs are set mid scale, both fans are running, the compressor is also running and the coils are clean. You most likely have a bad timer, compressor or thermostat. This is all that's left.

if there is frost build up on rear wall of freezer section the unit is not going through defrost cycle which builds up frost on evaporator and restricts cold air flow to the fresh food section. one of three things are bad. defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost timer. if no frost on rear wall you might be low of freon.

Fridge freezer over heating and is not cooling fridge section

It is normal for the middle strip to be hot. Did you check the temp setting in the fridge section?
Also - you might check for blockage in the bottom. Excessive dirt/dog hair can block the air flow.
Good luck
