when I launch a preview the laser covers only the first 4cm of the document and then stops with a bad noise...
what is wrong?
do you think I could mend it by opening the box and check the cables inside?
I dont know how to open it actually...

Most scanners scan the whole "bed" not just the document lying on it. Where no part of the document covers the bed usually appears as black.
Normally when scanning you are offered and option whether to scan the whole document or a portion thereof. When previewed, a dotted line appears around the portion the scanner thinks you want, you have to re-arrange that box so that it lies just within the part or the document you require.
Should this not resolve the issue the menu options on the left hand side of the Xerox web page should guide you to a resolution.
It seems that your scanner is conflicting with previously installed software. It is impossible to say whether it is Canon or Adobe. Reinstalling Acrobat or updating it may work as trying a different folder like Desktop instead of My Documents. One or more drivers are at fault. What system are you running? 2000, XP, Linux? Update your video rendering software too. Let me know so that I can help solve this issue. Just try as mentioned first.
Make sure you have the newest vista drivers located here - also, make sure that the scanner platen is travelling the full length of the scanner, it's not being hung up somewhere causing it to jam. Try to scan while the cover is open to watch the scanner head travel.
Have you considered simply scanning from within Adobe Acrobat or similar software that produces .pdf and then use the email feature within Acrobat?
As I look over the HP User Manual, I can't see any method to set the default output. It simply says...
Use the E-MAIL button() to scan documents or pictures and insert them in an e-mail message as an attachment. You must have an Internet connection and a supported e-mail application.
1. Place the original face down on the scanner glass or face up in the ADF. If you are scanning two-sided originals from an ADF, slide the DUPLEX switch to two-sided mode.
2.Press the E-MAIL button().A message appears asking if the original is a document or a picture.
3.Select Document or Picture, and click OK.Note:A preview image will not appear when scanning from the ADF. To change this preview setting, see the HP Photo & Imaging software Help.
4. Select the final scan area (the area inside the dotted lines) in the preview image.
5. Make adjustments to the preview image if needed.
6. Click Accept.The final scan area is scanned and your e-mail application is opened. The scanned image is added as an attachment to the e-mail message.
7. The Save As dialog box appears. Type a file name and choose a file type, and click OK.
8. Complete the e-mail as usual.
If you are receiving an Error Code 103 or a Paper Jam error,
but there are no pages in the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), follow
the steps below:
Close the scanning application (such as PaperPort)
Turn off the scanner and the computer
If you have a combination ADF with a Flatbed scanner, unplug the ADF cable from the base of the scanner
Plug the ADF cable back in
Turn on the scanner power
Turn on the computer
Try scanning again
For a Paper Jam or Error Code 103, make sure that the ADF cable in
the rear is connected to the scanner base. Check the flatbed to make
sure that it is clear. A page incorrectly placed on the flatbed may
interfere with a page feeding through the ADF.
If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic
Document Feeder (ADF), a warning dialog box appears after a few moments.
To clear a paper jam:
Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
Remove the jammed paper and close the cover.
If you are receiving a paper jam error, or if the scanner is
running continuously, check to make sure the paper sensor arm is not
Open the Automatic Document Feeder cover.
Look for the small black plastic arm
When you press on this arm, it should move freely up and down
If the arm is stuck down, please contact Technical Support for troubleshooting options
Clearing Paper Jams If your scanner stops scanning due to a paper jam in the Automatic Document Feeder, a warning dialog box opens after a few moments. To clear a paper jam: 1. Press the ADF cover release on the top-left of the scanner body to open the Automatic Document Feeder cover. 2. Remove the jammed paper and close the cover. To reduce the number of paper jams, smooth and straighten the paper before scanning and adjust the guides to the paper size.

I think the scanner may have got confused and be expecting another adaptor to be connected. If you slot in the single slide adaptor, wait until all the scan functions become active on-screen, then remove that and insert the SF-210, you might find it works OK.
Make sure the rectangular slots at either end of the film frame are not obstructed or covered in any way. When I attempted to scan color negatives I had the same darkness problem in the scanned image. When I cleared those rectangular slots, everything was fine. I hope this helps.
Before turning off the autocrop feature, reset the software to the default setting. Then turn off the autocrop feature. Some scanning software need to be reset to the original default condition and accept software switches only then!
