I have never had any problem with downloading photos, but now, despite having re-loaded the software (Ver 8.0) and Canon digital photo solution, my computer won't pick up the camera. What have I done differently this time?

Hello, if you have problems with your canon eos 20d you can download the service manual from the below link you will find there useful information like disassembly, troublehooting, repair Canon EOS 20D Service Manual Download link: http://goo.gl/EIsEb Good luck.
Consider NOT connecting the camera to the computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive.
All of the software, manuals and drivers are available on Canon's website.
ZoomBrowser is the the only software that may present installation problems if a previous copy is not already installed on your computer. Any old copy of ZoomBrowser will allow the most current version to be loaded from Canon.
There is no way to enter it on the camera, but some photo management programs like Photoshop Bridge, Lightroom, Aperture, etc have the ability to encode the photo's exif data on import of the photos to your computer automatically.
The autofocus mechanism on some lenses can be damaged if you manually focus while the camera is attempting to autofocus. Basically, you would be working against the motor and gears.
There is no need to download software before using the camera, however, I would suggest going to Canon's website and downloading the firmware upgrades for it. Here's the link:

Hope this helps!
Canon Vista compatible software now available
...with added support for some cameras, but not older ones. Go here:
and navigate to your camera model and select "Drivers/Software" link.
RAW Codec for Vista and updates to Zoombrowzer and DPP are available for the following:
EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1D Mark II N, EOS-1D Mark II, EOS 5D, EOS 30D, EOS 20D, EOS 400D DIGITAL, EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi, EOS Kiss Digital X, EOS 350D DIGITAL, EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT, EOS Kiss Digital N
Have you ever been able to view the pictures on your pc?
Have you got a card reader that can view the card contents externaly from the camera?
I found the Canon software is quite as happy from a card reader as it is reading from the camera. (I have the next model up, 30D.)
Have you tried upgrading your software, or tried using a third party image program to read the raw files?
Over to you!
I too have a Canon 20D and receive the same message. Zoombrowser works fine with my Canon G3, so the way I get around this problem is by using the other software that came with the 20D called EOS Viewer. This software will download your images every time. You might try sending a note to Canon's support team on the Canon website. They are very quick to respond to all questions and they can probably respond to this question too.
