I bought a Hitachi z5k320 hard drive trying to install it, and windows, but my computer won't recognize hard drive. how can i get it to recognize the new drive. can't do anything until that happens.

As long as you are sure the hard drive is connected properly with SATA cables to the motherboard and has power from the power supply unit, and that the drive is working, you can enter the BIOS on computer startup and modify the "boot device" look in "primary boot device" for a name matching that of your hard drive (probably "HITACHI .....) If it is there select it as the primary device and hopefully it will boot and ask you to install windows. If it is not there the drive may not be connected or it may need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

My maxtor ATA/133 hard disk is not working with my lapto, it has external usb power supply powered. and version maxtor 3.5 series, fireball 3

Try to open the external enclose and replace the hard drive, if that also does not work then open your start menu, right click on computer and click the "manage" button.
A management screen will appear and close to the bottom you will find disk management.
In disk management locate your hard drive in the list and right click on it and New Partition should appear (or enable) I cant remember it's been awhile since I've done it.
Enable it as a Master Boot Record (MBR) and use the entire volume. This hsould populate it in the list and give it a drive letter.
Also you can try plugging it into another computer, if it works with the otehr computer it could just be a drive letter issue in which you go into Disk Management, right click on the drive, click change drive letter and select a new, unused letter.

CHECK your bios setting first, and make sure, in hard disk boot priority section, your external hard disk is recognised and set as the first boot device. YOU NEED TO BE SURE YOUR BIOS SUPPORT BOOTING FROM USB FIRST.

IF the hard disk is there u can do several stuff to boot it:(unplug any internal hard disk first, TO MAKE BYPASS CONFLECT ISSUES)
- make sure the drive is seen, whene you are trying to install windows.
- go to recovery console in the setup disk, and reset you master boot record, type:1- fixmbr (or fixmbr c:) >>> WHERE "C:" IS YOU WINDOWS INSTALLATION DESTINATION!
2- fixboot
and then restart and try again......
- try to download plopboot manager, burn it to disk, and boot it, try to load your hard disk frome there.
- install any boot loader, like lilo or grub if you are familiar with, they can boot any os you like!

You can always install Grub to your Master Boot Record of the initial internel hard disk, **** you need to have basic knowlege on how to edit the menu.lst inside grub folder, and basic knowlege of linux partitioning schemr, becoz GRUB need to be installed there as well, **** whene you are already familiar with its use, you can boot any thing you like, even with a friendly boot menu at startup alowing you to choose the option you want to boot.

N.B: make sure you have googled and read about grub, and how to install in, if u have a windows installation on the internal hard disk and afraid to loos it, there is a tool called super grub disk, google for it and download it, it can be installed from windows, and it can automaticaly load windows ntldr/boot.ini.

dg luck.

I added an SATA HD to a system whose C and D drives are a WD 400GB PATA HD. The Hitachi 750GB drive has no jumpers for master/slave. After boot-up the system sees it but assigns no E or other letter...

  • Right Click [My Computer] and click Manage
  • Click Disk Management on the left side
  • Inspect the drives listed. The new drive may need to be formatted for the operating system to recognize it and assign it a letter.
  • To format the drive, right click the drive with no letter, and click Format. Choose your format (Preferred NTFS), and quick format the drive so that windows recognizes it.

Do a search for PC Fixer, a free tool. I had this problem on a Gateway I was trying to add this drive to. PC Fixer fixed the CD-ROM problem, but the drive seems to not be compatible with the Gateway for use as a master boot drive.

Partition error

Try using the command FDISK /mbr. This should fix the master boot record. If not, then if you don't care about the data on your drive, you could wipe it clean with any of the several utilities available on the web and then try partitioning it. Search for "Wipe Disk" in Google.
