I have the same problem with my ASUS A6R after just over 2 yrs of use...
Checked the flat cables but nothing wrong with them. Checked removing the battery and using only AC, no change.
Removed motherboard battery to reset the BIOS, still no change.
Any suggestions to a solution are very much appreciated.

hmm...sounds like you need a new palm rest..but you can open up the unit, and check to see if the ribbon cables are still connected.

you need to open up the unit, see if the cables are connected, and if not, it may be a new motherboard replacement

it is under the keyboard and palm rest

if you changed the motherboard in the laptop it is posible that the program will not be changed?because i want to be sure that the technician changed the motherboard.
