will the acer extensa 5210 with celeron M processor and 512 mb ram suffice for my GIS work and loading satellite imageries etc. I mean will resource intensive applications hang during multi-tasking?

MAybe the shared video card memory of your pc is very little? try to check it by going to RUN > Then type DXDIAG > then look at the display botton.
