Garmin Forerunner 205 won't power up

After charging my unit, it would power up. I even tried the computer, but it still wouldn't come on.

When charging the Forerunner 205, there is power to the unit. It appears to be fully charges (Battery charging Complete is displayed). I have had the device for about 1 1/2 years and never had an issue before. Now when I take the device out of the charger, it will not power up.

I have the same issue. My Garmin will not come on. I've tried charging it in the cradle and on my workstation. Still nothing. It comes on at times, then goes back off. The watch is only just over one year.

Same problem for me. Problem first surfaced just after I bought the watch last April. It then came on when I tried again and it has worked perfectly until today when it will not power up whether in its cradle or not.

Any ideas? It is just over a year old.

my problem is slighly different. i have it resting in the cradle that is attached to the pc, where it gets its power. it says it's charged when i remove it from the cradle. but after just one run, it says the battery is low. i've tried shutting it off while it's in the cradle, but that didn't work. i always return it right to the cradle and download the data. why is it losing juice so fast? my fear is that it will either **** out all together or die when i'm out running, rendering it useless. i'm now trying to use the cradle that attached directly to a ac outlet, but i don't think it's not getting juice, i think it's burning through it. help..........

How ironic. I posted last week that I was getting low battery issues. To my surprise (not), it won't power on at all now. I did follow the directions sent to me by Garmin tech support (which, I think I posted here), that said I should upgrade the software on the device. I am waiting to hear back from them about what they want me to do. I'll post when I hear back from them but this is the second unit I've owned in less than a year :(

Me again. For those of you who have had your Garmin die, was it a slow gradual death like mine, or sudden? I was getting warnings of low battery, I downloaded their software, it died the next day, I hard rebooted it, I charged it and it was fine, I shut it off and went to use it the next day and it wouldn't come on at all. Now it's on and working fine.

Also, if your died, did you ask Garmin to replace it? If so, what did they say? Does anyone know if the 305 has these problems?

  • morkkel May 20, 2008

Mine won't charge at all, have it in the cradle, but will say low batts even though I've had it "charging" for a week!

  • Mom Rae May 23, 2008

I charged it and when I took it off the charger  it won't even turn on. I have pushed the power button and it still won't come on.

I fixed prssing MODE & RESET at the same time, 3 seconds.....posted by a guest but did not allow me to rate the solution......but it worked!!!

  • Anonymous Jun 15, 2008

I have fix my Garmin, which had all of these problems. If you do a hard reboot, and get it going, you can fix yours, too. i put mine in the charger to give it some juice first, then did the hard reboot to start it up (press and hold the following buttons for ~3
seconds: MODE + RESET) and it came on. i then downloaded from their website, the upgraded software, which stopped the battery problems from happening (you have to download the new software to both the device and to your pc. when you bring it down to your co mputer and run the exe, it updates the device, and then you need to upgrade the software on the computer). then, i put it in the cradel, turned off, to let it continue to charge. I hope this works for others. I had really given up hope but I have revived mine, and it's totally worth it.

My 205 won't turn on. Ok while in the cradel as soon as you take it off, the power button won't work. Any ideas, I've tried to rebot, no go.

I had my first one replaced then a 3 month warranty expired on the second unit . Can you help

Relatively new unit - used 10 times, recharged once, never gotten wet etc. - with same problem. Did know that it would only work if I put pressure on the top of the watch face, across the words Forerunner 205 but could not figure it out until reading these other reviews. Upon very close inspection I can see that the top is separating from the bottom. When I put pressure on the face it seals the watch shut and it will boot up; as soon as I release the pressure the unit turns off. I've "fixed" the problem with a thick, strong rubber band to hold the case least until I can get it replaced. Wish I had kept that receipt - it's only a month old!

I have the 305, which is bascially the same but with the heart rate monitor. I've used the mode + reset for when the screen got stuck and it wouldn't power up and just a few minutes ago when the screen was blank and wouldn't power up. I just had to do a little online research to remember which buttons to push: MODE + RESET.

As vinerunner, Unable to power up /charge or communicate to Forerunner 205, but the unit is 18 months old.

No visual damage, pushed the front of the unit just above the display.

Pressed the the power button and now seems to be working. Saved me a few pounds.

Same issue. It works when connected to the cradle, but as soon as I remove it, it dies.

Awesome! MODE + RESET works!

I woke up this morning and found I had a charger death again. It happened two years ago, and I couldn't remember what I did to fix it then.

Lol no i found the true solution buy a garmin 405!

Here is the reason I truly am surprised that mine last for a year the g 205/305 is put very poorly built. The poor build is that when tightening the wrist band to tight it stretches the bottom half w/ wrist ban and charge sensor. When it is stretched the rechargeable battery and inside sensor that transfers the energy to the software (2nd half of watch top pat with screen) is disconnected. Which causes your g 205/305 to turn off. ---Dont pull the watch apart and try to fix it, will not work or stay back together.

If you look at the design of the G 405 the 2 halves of the watch are bolted to gether (205/305 it is glued!!!). Then with the chargers the 205/305 just sat on cradle and i had to use rubber band to keep it charging. Well for the G405 they changd the cradle to a clip with 2 metal pins that clamps to G405.

So far i have had the G405 for 2wks and it great. The GPS feeels more accurate and faster to connect. It has touch Bezel like a ipod you touch it to go throught modes, workouts, history etc....

Now for the bads when i sweet a lot i think it cuases the bezel to change modes or screens. No messages when you get off pace like the G205/305.

Not sure if this is helpful or not.......i did put my garmin in the cradle to charge for a little bit, and then took it off and did a hard reboot and it came back on. Hard-Reboot on your unit:
-Press and hold the following buttons for ~3 seconds: MODE + RESET.

SOURCE: Yesterday i download the forerunner

Did you install the software correctly? Because such errors appear usually when the update/upgrade is not finisher or was not done in a proper manner.
If possible try to verify the device on another computer (a friend's) to see if the same problem appear.
If the problem persists I'd say you've burned out your battery (hope not the hole Forerunner...!).

Garmin 295 forerunner will not turn on

Did you mean the Forerunner 205?
It is most likely that the battery has died in the unit or there may be a problem with the battery charger.
The internal battery in the Forerunner 205 is not user replaceable and the unit would need to go back to a Garmin repair for replacement.
Please call Garmin Tech Support for assistance.

I reinstalled the driver of my garmin forerunner 205 but it is still not recognized by my computer. it has been working for over a year but now I do not get any connection and the device is not recognized...

When you connect the unit to the cradle is there any reaction from the unit? I would try using a different USB port and cord first if this dosent fix your problem the next step would be to obtain a new cradle for your unit. They can be purchased here

Hope this helps!

The power wont turn on

The instructions say that you should "press and hold the ON" button (top left).

Perhaps you are not holding it on long enough (I think that a delay is built into the buttons to prevent accidental operation due to catching it on something).

My forerunner will no longer turn on or even charge, can they be repaired or am I best to buy a new unit?

Garmin will repair it for about eighty bucks.

But first, try cleaning the electrical contacts on the forerunner and the cradle by rubbing them with a pencil eraser. The slight abrasive should remove any oxidation on the metal. A bad contact between the unit and the cradle could be your problem.

Garmin Forerunner 205 Battery won't charge. A few

Hey everyone. Just called Garmin and got it fixed. Sometimes the forerunner goes into power saver mode and needs to be reset

1. Hook up the usb cable and docking station to the computer.
2. Next, hook up your forerunner to the Docking station - It should pop up saying battery charging in progress
3. Leave it all hooked up and Hold the Mode and Lap/Reset Button together for 15 seconds - screen should go blank.
4. Let both go - should pop back up saying battery charging in progress.
5. Let Charge 20 minutes and it should be good to go.

Hope this helps!!!

Garmin Forerunner 305 usb cable won't be read

The problem is probably not with the USB cable if the GPS wont even turn on. The older firmware of the Forerunner 205 and 305 have a problem with locking up. This causes the Forerunner to look completely dead. There is a reset procedure: push the mode and reset button at the same time and then let go and hit the power on button. If it powers on that is the problem. Go to the Garmin site and load the newest rev. of firmware into the Forerunner. Fixed mine and a few friends with the same problem.

I do however have a cable problem. Sometimes my PC will come up with unrecognized USB device and my 305 wont talk to the PC, it does charge. It is the cable or dock for sure, because I have tried a different cable/dock and the 305 has no problem. This is the reason I ended up here. I hope the lock fix works for those with the above problem.

Computer has a problem communicating with my forerunner 205

I just got off the phone with garmin tech. She helped me solve the problem. Here are the steps.

1. Go to

2. Download "Forerunner 205 Ver. 2.80 as of Nov 12, 2007", unzip it, and browse to the folder you unzip the files to.

3. Make sure your Forerunner is connected to your computer and turn it on. Drag file "048401000280.rgn" and drop it on "Updater.exe". A screen will pop up, select "USB" then click OK. Then wait till the process completes.

4. Go to the website on Step 1 and download "Training Center For Windows Ver. 3.3.4 as of Feb 29, 2008". Install it.

5. Run Training Center. At this point, I am able to send/receive data to my Forerunner.

Hope this helps!
