Most common failure in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, falied inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further.
Ok try to plug in the problem monitor to a working pc. If the monitor still does not work it would need replacing. If it works then its the original pc that you pluged in the frist time that needs either a new video card or to check it for software issues.

thats right,power at the mains lead (i have conected another monitor to it)but no power light & no image on screen, even with a torch.
Was this monitor working before? So now the unit while plugged into your pc is not showing any image on your screen (black)?
