You need to download and install the Garmin WebUpdater and Garmin Communicator Plugin both available from Garmin's website onto your computer. This allows updates to be installed directly to the 765T and provides the necessay USB drivers as well. The 765T must be connected to your computer when performing all updates or upgrades.
You may need to create a MyGarmin account and register your Nuvi 765T.
Resetting the 765T: with the unit off, press your thumb or finger in the lower right corner of the screen while turning the 765T on. This will clear all user data, base map software will remain intact. Connect 765T to computer and proceed with the Garmin WebUpdater.

REMEMBER: It takes hours to do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.
Did you first make sure it was safe to disconnect from your computer before you unplugged the unit??? You first must click on the icon that shows you have something connected to the computer and click the turn it off, or safe to disconnect box and wait for the computer to tell you it is safe to do so. Try that,, and see if it helps you.
I had same problem. I called Garmin customer service who connected me to a computer rep. Garmin hooks with your computer that you have your Garmin plugged into. They can upload the proper software in no time at all.
The rep told me that after I updated my Garmin I might have turned off the unit before it completed updating the new software. You need to wait until the screen with "Where to?" appears.
It works great now. Prepare to wait on hold for a while. I waited just over an hour on Monday, their busiest day.
