Is the new hard drive replacing the first, or is this a second drive?
Is there a specific error message the computer is reporting when it fails?
If you go into the BIOS, does it show that it recognizes the second drive?

The first thing I would check would be the jumpers. On the back of the drive, between the power connector and the IDE cable, are the jumpers. Usually on the top of the drive is a diagram showing the proper positions for various settings.

There are three choices that are significant: Master (or Primary), Slave (or Secondary) and CS (Cable Select). Usually CS is the appropriate setting. If you kept the original drive plugged into the same position on the cable, and both drives are on CS, then you should be ok. However, it may be better to force the issue. Set the original (boot) drive to PRIMARY and the new drive to SECONDARY and try again.

Disc drive won't open

CD/DVD drive?

Some have a tiny hole, right under the tray that comes out. Use a paperclip in the hole to manually open the tray.

(Some desktop computer towers have a door in front, that needs to be eased open first, then access to the actual CD/DVD drive unit can be obtained)

Power turns on, but there is blank screen with small gray picture of the folder with ? on it

This is not good news. That blinking "?" icon means that the computer is unable to find a disk drive that contains what it needs to start up. It's a real problem, and if you are not an experienced computer person, consider getting professional help with it.

- The worst case is that your hard drive is seriously damaged - you're going to need a new hard drive and you've probably lost all your saved stuff
- Or, if you're lucky, some essential files are missing or damaged but the rest of the disk is OK.

If you want to try and solve this yourself, here's what to do:

If you have the disk that came with it when you bought the computer, put that in the disk drive slot and try again to start the computer. If the computer still won't start up, you definitely need professional help.

If it starts up using the DVD, the very first thing you should try to do is recover and save (back up) all your saved files. Do that before you try to fix the bad hard drive.

Look on the screen for the icon for your hard drive. If it's there, that's good news because you should be able to find all your valuable files and copy them to an external disk drive. If you don't already own an external hard drive, I recommend that you seriously consider buying one. After you've gotten this mess straightened out, I recommend that you continue to use your new external drive, with Apple's "Time Machine" software, so you always have your stuff backed up.

After you've backed up your files, go to the folder on your desktop for the CD that you booted from and try reinstalling MacOS. If the reinstall works, you'll be back in business. If it doesn't, you'll have to replace the hard drive.

Dvd writter is not working

Replace the rubber belt inside. That rubber belt keeps other rotating parts inside to move faster as the motor is running, replaced it with a tight one so that when your insert a cd the optical inside can easily read your cd. The optical lens need to run with as a desired speed of your ROM xspeed.

Put a new gear belt and replace the old and tired belt inside.

Dvd writter not working

if the device is set up as a master and not a slave device it may be interfering with the hard drive. check the jumpers on the back of the device. If it's plugged into the same cable as the hard drive it must be a slave device. Otherwise, check your bios upon bootup to see if you it's trying to boot from the device instead of from the hard drive.
