Ibm 6400 012 cta serial# 01a3606

The printer is not printing all the way across the paper! it has a new ribbon, the first 10 - 15 characters are not printing. it does print in the middle section, and the last 20 or so characters are not printing??? what can cause this?? the shuttle??

Hi there, I hope you haven't throw away the printer.. :)
i face similar problem.. its solve by tightening the ribbon latch screw that secure the latch to the ribbon motor.

Hi I work in a restaurant and we have a Epson TM-U220A Model M188A printer. The last few days the printer has not been printing on the White receipt paper. We've tried replacing the ink and it doesn't do...


If this is the thermal head model, you will need to have the print head replaced. These were also sold under the Dell label, so finding a used replacement printer may be more economical. If it takes ribbons, you will need:

This error is indicating a problem with print head movement.
This error can be indicated if there is any thing which may be preventing print head movement, things you can check include;

That the he printer ribbon is not jammed and is located correctly in the printer,
Check to ensure there is no paper jam of loose paper which may prevent print head movement
Check the carriage shaft to ensure it is free from paper dust or any other obstructions.

With the printer powered off, the print head should slide freely across the width of the printer, you can then see if there is any obstruction to the print head.
You may then need to check the following for faults;
Ribbon Driver
Carriage Motor
Carriage Belt
Timing Strip
Logic Board
Interconnect Board.

I have an error message on my 2280+ Serial Printer that says ''Hardware Alarm'' Could you be as kind as to help me with this one please?


The 2280+ will normally display two lines of numbers when it displays a Hardware Alarm error. These numbers give a better idea of what might be causing the problem.

Some things you might want to try are;

1. Power the printer off, and remove the ribbon from the printer. Try sliding the print head from side to side. The print head should be free to move when the printer is powered off. In doing this you can check for any instructions which may be stopping the print head moving.
2. Check the ribbon cartridge, ensure the ribbon cartridge is not jammed, twisted or damaged. Perhaps try powering the printer on with no ribbon and try printing to identify if the ribbon may be causing the problem.
3. Clean the Timing Strip and Carriage shaft.
The Carriage Shaft is the metal shaft that runs the width across the printer. This is the shaft the print head slides across.
The carriage shaft should be clean and free from any type of lubricant. I would recommend cleaning this shaft and any build up of paper dust or other dirt on the carriage shaft this can cause problems with print head movement. If the carriage shaft has any lubricant I would recommend cleaning this lubricant off the carriage shaft.

The Timing strip is a thin plastic strip that runs across the printer just next to the carriage shaft. I would recommend cleaning the Timing Strip with a dry cloth to remove any dirt or dust. The printer uses the timing strip to monitor the position of the print head. If the timing strip is dirty or dusty this can prevent the printer detecting the position of the print head and will cause this type of error.

Other than that you may need to see what other errors are being seen on the pritner.

White ink the ribbon, should do the job, never seen anything comercially for it.

Horzontally double printing & characters are not clers.


Is the ribbon tight or sticking, If ribbon can't turn, it delays entire carriage, you will notice that if you move carriage up and down by hand ribbon turns, I have seen sticky ribbon s cause problems as well as gearing that drives ribbon with wornout gears

If self test fails then all faults /i can think of on these is

  • Dry rail/dirty bearing
  • incorrectly manufactured ribbon
  • Damaged dot head
  • broken/breaking ribbon interface carriage cable
  • worn ribbon drive gears
  • worn/dirty ribbon drive rail
  • main board

IBM 6400 model i10 print problem


It's likely a "hammer" is defective. This can be caused by
a build up of ink under the ribbon shield and/or around the hammer "fret" itself or the fret is physically broken. Remember
that this is a "shuttle" printer and each fret covers anywhere from
one to three characters depending on model. Some cover fractions of characters as well. The problem will appear as either
data missing on the left or right margin or a blank column of missing data going down the page.

A technician is required to solve all of these problems as the
shuttle assembly must be removed.
