Use sony dcr-sr40 as webcam

unfortunately for this model, it would not be possible to be use as a webcam. it uses HDD as its recording media. it may actually work if you have:
1.an a/v capture card installed in your computer that connects to the a/v jack of the camcorder.
2.a webcam application software that supports a/v connection
basically, you would need a camcorder that that has a usb streaming feature and a computer that has an OS that supports it (i.e win xp),or you can use ilink (dv or ieee1394) connection So you should be using a digital-8 or dv camcorder.it works perfectly as a webcam.of course, your webcam software should be designed to work with whatever connection your using.hope this info helps.tnx:)

Will not reconize the disc

You have two options:
1.Get a cleaning disc if this is available to you.follow instructions that came with the disk.insert it like normal disk and let is play for a few seconds
2.press the eject button to open the disc compartment and look for the otical head(looks like a miniature eye). carefully roll a samm a piece of tissue to have a pointed tip and immerse the tip only in water. run the tip on the surface of the eye several times taking care not to lleave any particles on the eye. leave to dry and reinsert the disc. plaese reply if this works for you.

Further info on eye pc view

The recording mechanism itself was damaged in the fall and that is why it can't record new ones and also sounds like the reason the eye piece is not working the only option you have for a high tech piece of equipment like this is to have it serviced I can help you locate local repair with your zip code(or city) or you can locate the closest authorized service center here:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=1,24,26,66,9,70,5,72
If you need any further assistance please let me know.
Thanks,

White Balance

What is White Balance? The human eye captures white as white, red as red and blue as blue, regardless of whether you are outside under the sun or inside under incandescent lighting. Although this is something that we take for granted, the human eye actually adapts to correct the changes in color under different light sources. In reality, when light sources vary, colors caught as the reflection of those light sources also vary. For instance, films for cameras that use film are designed to capture the most appropriate coloring outside under the sun. Thus when you take pictures under incandescent or fluorescent lighting without using a flash, the colors in the resulting picture may seem strange. Digital camera and digital camcorders are equipped with a handy feature called "White Balance" that corrects the changes in color under different light sources, just like the human eye. One of the white balance settings, "Auto White Balance" (AWB) automatically adjusts to correct the changes in color under different light sources. White Balance and Coloring The White Balance feature on Canon digital cameras and camcorders is set to "Auto White Balance" at the time of purchase. If you prefer different coloring, if you want to adjust the coloring more in detail, or if you want to change the coloring on purpose, we recommend that you change the white balance setting.
