The printer makes a noise that sounds like a machine gun as soon as it starts to print, but just at that time and each time it prints. The noise does not continue, but stops once the printer starts printing. It is a Officejet J5780 all-in-one.

It sounds like the cleaning sled is binding. Likely due to ink sludge build up in the waste station. Look into the printer, on the right side, where the cartridge rest when not in use. If this area looks very inky your printer may need servicing.

Printing starts ok, then usually about halfway through it makes a clattering noise [like gear wheels slipping making printer judder]this does not always affect the print but sometimes gives vertical...

Hi Paul,
I have exactly the same problem and I also use Permajet (like you, successfully for a while). In fact I took the printer into a shop that does maintenance but it printed fine for them. As soon as I got it home the problem started inmediately! At random points in the print you get a crunching noise and the print has vertical marks on it. The engineer at the shop had no idea what this could be and I just wondered if you had solved it.
I've swapped cables, installed it on different machines but nothing works.
Kind regards
John

While printing there is a noise

Maybe go to a local store and try a display model of the same printer and see if it makes identical sound. If it doesn't make the same, contact whoever you bought from to see about warranty or refund. Can also contact HP customer service for advice.

Printer made machine gun noise. will not print.

The print head is stuck - something has jammed it and the noise you are hearing is the carriage for the print head. Open the top and try moving the head by head sideways to see what has jammed it.

Hp 6200 makes machine gun sound before printing, when the print carriage goes all the way to the right is when i hear the machine gun sound, it still prints fine.

Hi,

This is quite normal with this series of printers. Happens on my 6310. It "machine guns" only occassionally (once a month), and then the gunning noise slows down slowly, then the print starts. Might be shaking the head to clear ink rigorously or something.

Canon PIXMA 530 grinds away

I had a persistant grinding noise about 30 seconds after the printer finished printing. It's been going on about 2 months. I did one thing which seemed to work. So try opening the cover on the back of the machine by lifting upward on the gray lever in the middle of the back of the machine. Leave this cover open during and after printing. The grinding noise went away.
