Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens
Have this camera for 1 day and I already broke it? I was able to take one decent picture (idiot proof setting- green square). Then changed the setting to no flash because flash popped up for the 2nd, 3th,... photo (not really dark outside, just a little cloudy). 2nd and 3th photo (with flash) were nowhere near decent quality and it just got worse from there to the point where I now have only total blackness when taking a picture in the idiot proof mode. Photos are black so I know it doesn't have anything to do with the lcd. The only way I can make a picture is in AV mode with an aperture of 14 or more. Then, at least something shows up on the lcd screen but let me tell you, it ain't pretty.
Using the 400d with the kit lens (18-55mm)
So, just bad luck ? Am I overlooking something or did I actually break the thing after one picture ?
Hi, sounds like a shutter problem, try taking a picture in manual mode with an exposure of around 1 second and the aperture stopped right down (small appiture)in daylight.
when you say its not pretty i guess you mean blurred?
If your still getting a black image, take the lens off and put it in bulb and press and hold the shutter release if the shutter dose'nt open and stay open while you hold it then its certainly the shutter.
Its not your fault, all the eos cameras are prone to shutter failure
some are fine for 50,000+ shots others die within a thousand
My fingers are crossed for you that its under warranty. If not a repair in the uk can be done for around 140ukp or $200 in the US, the shutter isn't expensive (about $60) but its several hours work to replace it
Best of luck
