Drive won't mount and makes slow clicking sound

Lacie External USB 2.0 500 GB 7200 RPM

Drive won't mount on Mac screen. the drive makes a slow clicking sound and with it the orange/green light flickers at the same time between orange and yellow.

there is still plenty of disc space and I noticed it was slowing the computers down recently so ran a Utility Disk Check and all was reported fine with ALL of my disks, including this one.

Now I cant mount it and it makes a click sound. Any clues as to what the prob is? I need to the data of it as this was my back-up disc!

A power supply failure can cause this; I've just been through it myself. If you have access to another LaCie drive, try its power supply on the "failed" one and see if it works.

Very good suggestion on switching power adapter. My hard drive is back on business! I wasn't panicking about my data cause I actually back it up onto two separate external hard drives. So, if one dies, the other still available. I'd highly recommend folks to do the same. Your data is worth every single penny you can spend on another hard drive.

Same problem with my LaCie. I unplugged the power from another LaCie, put it in the one I thought was bad and YAHOO, my drive is back. This was my backup drive, so I am ECSTATIC. Thank you for posting the suggestions!!!!!! Now I just need to figure out how to get both LaCies operational at the same time.

Mine was doing the same as the others and the
Power supply was my issue.

Brilliant and simple.

How can I open a LaCie B350 External Hard Drive?

You can carefully pry the bottom off with a screwdriver and remove the drive.  No problem using a "USB to IDE/SATA cable" ( Here's the first hit on Google: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002  Worth $20. ) to copy off your data.  Or you could mount in your desktop PC.

LaCie 500GB external will not show up on mac desktop. Blue light on, whirrs as if working but no icon on desktop (not mounted)

Did you format the drive using Disk Utility? Open "disk utility" from the dock icon or applications/utilities folder. Click the drive name on the left side of the disk utility window. click the "partition" tab in the window, next click the "options" tab and select GUID Partition scheme, or any Mac compatible scheme, read each explanation of the schemes. Name and resize your partitions, click apply. This is how it works running Leopard, not positive if the same applies to Tiger. I hope this helps you

External hard drive

500Gb Lacie D2 Quadra with the same problem of flashing led and not mounting on the desktop (Mac G4 Mirror), traced to the power supply (57w) going down on power, both 12v and 5v supplies are available but the main power to run the drive drops to below an adequate output, hence the clicking and whirring evident from the drive with simultaneous flashing led.

Testing with another Lacie power supply (250Gb D2) this time a 34w unit got the drive up and running, however, and this is the reason for this post, this lower power PSU failed a week later whilst waiting for a warranty replacement from Lacie (5 weeks and still waiting for the new PSU from them. they have no stock)

Message for all Lacie D2 users, check the power supplies first, test with another Lacie PSU, do not run the drive on a lower rating (34w) PSU it will fry it and leave you with another failed power supply.

If you are in a tight spot use the temporary power supply to move your data to another drive and get the correct 57w power supply before running the drive again.

Don't do as I did assume any Lacie power supply will run any Lacie hard drive, they won't, fortunately I had a second back up, but am 2 drives down and no new PSU's available to buy anywhere.

Try and purchase another spare 57w power supply, something all D2 users should do for long term security, as these do not seem to be very reliable and getting warranty support from Lacie on these is currently impossible.

The lack of 57w power supplies from Lacie and its distributors across the world is surely a warning to be noted!!!!!!

Buyers beware!
