Question about Olympus FE-190 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lens problem Hi. I have an Olympus FE-190 digital camera. not sure what happened, but now there is a problem with the lens. when i turn on the camera, the lens extends, retracts, several times (trying to find "home" I think). Image on the display screen is blurry. it WILL take a very blurry picture. there is a faint 'ratcheting" sound when the lens is fully extended. is there a way to 're-set" or calibrate the lens extension setting or focus? thanks very much for your assistance.

nothing i can try at home?

  • OahuBob Mar 10, 2008

Yes, i'm definitely getting the flashing green dot. The "focus" will hold when i hold the button down halfway.

Seems to me that the problem is probably mechanical, having to do with the lens extension mechanism at power on. this would probably lend to a focus problem, is some gear isn't meshing somewhere in the system.

Since i don't have a manual, what is the resolution for the flashing green dot?

    Thanks.

Well, the FE-190 does not offer a manual focus mode, which includes no mechanism for manually "correcting" the autofocus system.

    One thing you could try:

The camera does sport a "Focus Lock" feature to force the camera to focus on a specific subject.

Aim the camera at an object, like a wall. Press the
shutter button halfway down; the camera should automatically focus on the
subject. The focus is supposed to be locked at this focal distance until you
release the shutter button or take the picture.

Does this happen like it is supposed to? Does the camera not try to focus at all (try some different distances)? Or does it attempt to focus but misjudge the focal distance?

NOTE: If you see a blinking green light in the upper left of
the LCD monitor when composing your shot, that is the camera telling you that the focus and exposure are
not adjusted properly. The manual says to try locking the focus again, but if the autofocus system is broken it will just fail again and again.

Page 54: "Release your finger from the shutter button, re-position
the AF target mark on the subject and press the shutter
    button halfway again."

Not much help... Just says try again.

You can view your instruction manual here. There is an "advanced manual" for sale from Olympus which, unfortunately, I don't have access to. Perhaps it would be worth $10 to check it for some kind of answer to your problem?

I lost driver cd ,i need drivers & software

Hi,

There are no drivers needed for the Olympus FE-190. Once connected through its USB, the computer will treat it as a USB mass storage device similar to a removable /flash drive.

If for some reason the PC won't recognize the camera, it is probably a problem with the USB cord, the USB port or the memory of the camera.

Alternately, you can use a memory card reader and slip in the memory card of the camera to gain access to the content/pictures.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Olympus fe-190 camera, keep getting message lens error, restart camera, also monitor is grainy and fuzzy, unable to take crisp, clear pictures, and make strange sound...

The problem you are describing is a problem with a sensor in the lens assembly. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $80.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

Olympus FE-190 lense

If the internal lens barrel gets knocked out of alignment it will cause that condition. If the camera senses that the lens is not in the proper position or not moving, it will turn back off rather than cause more damage. Pushing on the lens barrel to try to fix it will usually cause more problems than it already has. It has to be disassembled to be repaired.

at this point you may also want to check on your warranty status.

My camera isnt working

if the picture turns all white, then you might have a problem with the screen.
-or your're just aiming it at a bright object. (try covering the lens with your hand- dont actually touch it, just block out the light and if the screen goes dark then its still working)

if some sand or grit got inside your camera, then you have a serious problem, as sand is very abrasive, and could damage the internal mechnisims.

you should seek professional help on getting the inside cleaned out.
