DVD's not working

I am running windows XP home. The CD/DVD drive model # is: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC4522B. It has no problem reading Cd's, but it no longer recognizes DVD's. I also have an external HP DVD burner that no longer recognizes DVD's. Both drives previously worked and now only work with CD's, but not DVD's. The computer came with Power DVD, the external DVD burner came with NERO. I haven't re-installed Nero yet because I was afraid it might have been the beginning of my problem (a software conflict or something?). Could firmware be the problem?

Install Nero and it should solve your problem. I have had this same problem myself once before. Sounds strange, but it will not read when you uninstall Nero. It takes something out when you do that. Nero has nothing to do with Power DVD. Power DVD does nothing, but lets you watch DVD'S. Call me crazy, but reinstall Nero and let me know if it works.

Hi,

It might be a firmware issue also. but think wether if you have installed any programs and the problem started. Try doing a system restore. Or contact your systems manufacturer to get information on your firmware update...

Kindly give a feed back to Improve and to see If it was helpful for you...
Thanks and Regards

OS is Windows XP Professional, my cd drive cannot read the data stored on a DVD disk. My driver is HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4482. Thank you

Windows XP is no longer supported, you should up-grade to Win 7 or buy a new computer. As for the DVD that it can't read, try it on a friend's computer and see if it works. If it does, your DVD/CD drive is defective or there is a software driver issue which means you can't receive support from Micorsoft.

Tip

DRIVER NEEDED: Hitachi hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4241n (Windows XP Home)

DRIVER NEEDED: Hitachi hl-dt-st rw/dvd gcc-4241n (Windows XP) [IDE]

Simple solution:

Situation
There is a yellow exclamation mark for CD/DVD drives in Device Manager. The device status in the properties of the driver might indicate an error code, for example 32, 37, or 39. Or the drive simply does not appear in My Computer or Device Manager.

Solution

To solve the issue, you have to edit the Windows Registry:
Click Start, then Run, type REGEDT32 and click OK.
Locate and then remove the following registry values:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}LowerFilters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}UpperFilters

topic_02125.gif

Close Registry Editor.
Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.

Note: Some programs are unable to detect the CD/DVD drive after these steps. To solve this, simply re-install the program in question, eg: usually your recording software. Also, in few instances the order in which the programs are (re-)installed can make a difference.

What software are you using to burn with? Have you tried other CD's? What are you trying to burn? Is the file/files copyright protected? Will the DCD/CD rom play media? Have you upgraded your OS?

What fix to apply to HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B in Dell Dimension E310 so it can read/play a dvd movie?

Try the following:

1. Go to the Dell.com support site and be sure you have the latest updates for your computer's operating system and the DVD drive, especially the DVD drive's drivers BIOS.

2. Make sure you have the software to play the movie, like Sonic, Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Quicktime, etc. and be sure they are the latest versions.

3. Depending on the movie format, not all DVD drives will play all DVDs. The most common discs are DVD-R and DVD+R and file types like *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mp4, *.mov and then commercial formats. Also try the movie in another machine or DVD player and see what happens.

Put the "System Restore" disk into the drive,
and restart your computer.
Choose to "change boot order" so that the first boot-device is your CD/DVD unit.
Your computer *WILL* boot from the disk in the drive,
allowing you to reinstall Windows.

HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GSA-H21N ATA Device is not working gives a code 10....tried for new drivers was all updated..tried to uninstall and reboot then reinstall nada. This is a acer comp.

Right click on “Computer” or “My Computer” in XP. Select Manage and then on the right side select device manager. On the left if you see a yellow exclamation mark next to your drive and were getting any of the above error codes then we have a simple fix.
Go ahead and right click on the CD or DVD drive that has a yellow exclamation mark next to it and select delete or remove.

try to search:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Now that you are at the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Folder on the right side you will see several entries. right Click and delete the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters. These will be remade once you reboot.

This will try to look for the drivers again..
