Question about Maxtor Hard Drive

Installed 2nd internal Maxtor 4R120LO 120gb HDD as a slave

I installed a 2nd Maxtor 4R120LO 120gb HDD as a slave in Window XP Home Edition OS.
The master HDD is an IDEDISKT340015A 40gb which is not only full to the brim but has the OS, several application systems like Microsoft Office 2003, Libwin 2002 etc. Almost all these appl. systems have no backup software. When I tried to load the OS from the CD onto the slave HDD, the software was rejected as out of date since there has been numerous updates.
My problem is that there is always an urgent notice saying that my master HDD is full even after I have the slave fully installed and partitioned and formatted.
How do I load some of the programms which are on my master HDD to the slave? I want to maintain the current set-up whereby my master (rated at 40gb) remaims the booting HDD and the slave can coordinate with it.

Please help before my computer crashes!

Thanks for the help but there are things I need to point out.

    1. I have deleted all unwanted files a long time ago. All remaining files contain absolute important stuff. I can't delete anything.

    2. I need to move some programmes from C disk (i.e the master) to my 2nd slave disk drive which i disgnated as F drive. This hard drive has been partitioned and formated.

    Are my questions still unclear?

    Hallo Iqbal_del

I suppose the only thing I can do now is to call for expert help. I have always thought it could be done by a lay man.

    Should I abandone all hope?

Your question is very much clear. I understand your problem. But the technic the widnows uses to install software is not so simple that they use path and folder name for the application, actually the do alot of things to your registry too. And its not easy to modify all of them to indicate that these software is now located at this drive or location.

If you are well known with partions then do one thing:
1. Copy your all files and folder to your F drive from D drive
2. Delete all files and folder from D drive
3. Load and run partion magic.
(To Download click here or search on net)
4. Using partition magic delete the partition D
5. After deleting the partition D, resize your C partition.

After that you will get more space on your C drive.

Note: You can use partion magic to resize or delete partion without data loss.

Jonathan plz tell me which OS you are using. If you are using Vista then you can do it easily following my suggestion.

But if you are using XP then you must have to use the Partition Magic or another software which support Partition resizing without loss of data.

So, now its upto you, if you want to do your self or what...?

1. Delete all the files you don't need from your documents.

2. Move the windows virtual memory file onto the second disk.

This will also speed your machine up when its ram is fully used and you need virtual memory .

Right click my computer, choose properties, select the advanced tab. Click the performance button and then select the advanced tab. See virtual memory section at the bottom and choose change. Set D drive the drive for swap space. You will need to reboot.

3. Run the disk cleanup wizard. Choose from the start menu "All Programs" -> Accessories - >System Tools -> Disk cleanup.

4. When finished rund Disk Defragmenter on the same menu.

5. if you still have limited space on the C -drive and you have loads of stuff in your My Documents folder try... Right clicking on My Documents on the desktop, choose Move, select the d: drive.

or de-install your applications from C drive and re-install them onto D drive.

Can't read HD-- I/O error

"Joecolvette" has probably got it right, I've seen this before. The HDD enclosure circuit board has a fault. Can be resolved by replacing the enclosure. Plenty on ebay, just ensure you buy one with the correct HDD interface (Sata or IDE).

Alternatively, if you have a tower with a spare port, you could take the HDD out of the caddy, install it in the tower as a "Slave" (check jumper settings) ensuring the system drive is set to "Master". Then you can check whether the HDD itself is at fault.

Hi. I was given a computer with a dead HDD. I replaced the HDD but I need to install a copy of Windows XP Home Edition. I have a valid license but no software. The computer was purchased new with XP...

The best advice anyone can give you is to contact Microsoft at:

If you have a valid license, Microsoft should provide you with a legal copy of the OS. No one at FIXYA is going to provide you with a copy of a Microsoft OS, because that would constitute piracy. Contact Microsoft directly and we can all avoid the legal problems of engaging in criminal activity.

Good luck; please let us know how this turns out.

I have a Maxtor one touch 2 external hard drive,serial#2dd10020,worked fine on Windows XP,I'am now using it on Windows 7,it shows up in computer as drive Z,I cannot unlock it to get to my files, any help...

ok for one your computer no matter what OS you are using stores no drive letter , a drive letter is only given in the order as it is
installed on your system for example if you use 2 internal HDD
and one external HDD your computers C: drive will be the master
the F: will be the slave and the external will be G: , now if you have changed the order of the drives from your last OS then it
will conflict to the last drive letter given , your unit will know
what letter it was given so it must be in the same location for
the new OS , there is also the possibility that Windows 7 doesn't
support the driver for that unit , you can try hooking it up to
another computer retrieving your data , then hooking it back
up to windows 7 run its software , then installing the data back
into your HDD

hello customer,
The life of an external Maxtor is about a year, in our experience.

If you cannot detect the drive so that it shows up in your BIOS or in the hardware list of Windows, it may be trouble. You can remove the drive from the case and try it in a computer to see if detected there.

Despite your tests, I would try an new or known working USB 2.0 cable, check all connections carefully by removing and resetting them. Be certain your power adapter is working and that no cables are crimped.

Have you tried installing it as a slave on the same IDE cable with your hdd with your OS system on it?

Most any current hdds should last longer that a year unless they have be subjected to some form of trama, not just internal hdds but externals as well. I had a guy who had nocked his external hdd off the table and couldn't understand why that should effect it. hope u find this useful. expecting ur feedback. thank you.

2nd HDD installed as slave but still unloaded with software

Simple, if your hardware is working all OK do this:
AND DO THIS CUZ WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION lacks of the needed administrative tools.

Go to the net and find PARTITION MAGIG or PARTITION MANAGER... download the windows version of any of those and partition the HD with them.

2. PARTITION MUST BE NTFS (Windows XP version) that you will see in Partition Magic options...
3. If you format from Windows, disk must be intitialized as BASIC type.

if you do this and you suceed the HD will work, if not, it has a problem, either logical or physic.

Good Luck

HDD not recognized in XP Installation

if you are using it as a slave hard drive, you should be able to right click my computer, manage, then in next window double click storage, then disk management, then look for your drive, you can then look to see if its recognised, if not it will tell you that its not configured, and you should be able to right click on it and format it.
