I have the same problem, except it is my freezer that is turning off and the refrigerator is working fine. The refrigerator is out in the garage and it is winter, so I'm wondering if the cold is affecting the freezer some way?

I have a Whirlpool side by side with water and ice dispenser that I purchased new 5 years ago, and I have had the same problem. I am having it again now....the fridge won't cool, but the freezer is all frosted up. If you look in the fridge, at the very top back left hand corner, there is a little grate that flows from the freezer to the fridge. There should be a strong, steady feeling of cold air coming through that grate. If there is not, and there is ice building up on that grate, and there is a lot of frost building up in the freezer, then there is likely a problem with a little motor that is on the freezer side of the appliance. This little motor has something to do with the defrost cycle of the freezer. WHY this should have a detrimental effect on the fridge is beyond me, except for bad design planning. It runs around $170-200.00 to repair. This is the second repair of the same issue in 5 years for me, and I am not thrilled with this Whirlpool fridge, believe me.

You have a frost issue. You may need a defrost timer, defrost thermostat, or defrost heater.

Fridge part working freezer not

The fridge is just the end of the freezer evaporator. If the freezer isn't cold inside, check the rear panel. It is probably frozen solid with no air getting through. Switch off, leave doors open for 24 hours and be prepared for lots of water to come out. Clean the condenser and make sure the fan inside is ok. Reset the thermostat to middle of the range and be sure to come back to tell us how you get on.

Only half of the freezer and half of the fridge are working

heat rises and cold stays down on the lower shelves,if the evap fan motor isn't blowing this will happen, next time send the brand name and model number off of the machine, open the freezer door,if you don't hear the fan blowing you have a bad evap fan motor, all it does is the freezer gets cold, the fan blows the cold air from the freezer to the fridge section, also if the fan isn't working when you remove the back inside wall of the freezer if there's any ice melt it out with a hair dryer, unplug the machine before you start working on it,call your parts store, give them the model number and they will sell you the parts you need.

The freezer works fine; the refrigerator isn't cold.

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

Freezer is ok, but fridge is not cold enough

5 reasons for fridge and/or freezer getting warm: 1- the evaporator coils are icing up and won?t let air circulate. 2- the evaporator fan is not working to circulate air. 3- there is no refrigerant in the system. 4- no power to fridge or compressor. 5- the condenser coils have no air circulation check under the fridge behind the vent. if it is too dusty or the fan isn?t working, it is not getting enough airflow to cool down. replace fan and/or vacuum out the dust. if there is no power to the fridge, the light will be off. if the compressor is not running, there is a defrost timer that cuts the power temporarily to the compressor to melt ice on the coils. it?s located under the fridge behind the bottom vent. If the timer is off and the compressor is not going, the compressor or the main board is bad and needs replacing. there is also a temperature sensor on the evaporator coils that tells the defrost coil to turn on and when to turn off. if the defrost timer is on but the coil is not heating up, replace the sensor. if it still won?t heat up, it?s the timer or the coil. the easiest way to tell if there is no refrigerant- the freezer wall is warm and the compressor is loud. if there is no refrigerant, it may be more cost effective to replace the fridge. if you feel no air coming from the freezer vent, the fan needs replacing. If you feel air moving in the freezer but not the fridge, the channel from freezer to fridge is blocked.
