Question about Acer TravelMate 2300 Notebook

Acer Travelmate 2410 with display probs

I've recently installed a new xp & ubuntu onto this std laptop and all was working fine for a few days. Next thing I k**w is when I boot up the screen display is best described as funky (when booting up the Acer appears in low def, when the screen displays black there is green shadows to the right of the characters, and when I boot into firefox the white background appears pink. When I highlight the text it turns purple). This seemed to sort itself out after 30mins but then reverted to this strange colour scheme. I've tried to uninstall the vga driver thinking this was the problem but to ** avail. I **ticed a similar problem with a**ther user but was wondering if perhaps this may be the graphic card burning out or a cable issue running from the lcd to the motherboard? I am going to plug this into a**ther lcd to check but any further info would be appreciated. Thanks

Could be the screen is running with the wrong colour depth and resolution - reset the settings by right clicking on the screen selecting properties and then adjust on the settings tab.

How did you install Ubuntu? Using a Live CD I presume. If you were able to boot from the CD-Rom and run the Linux installation either as a demo or a physical installation then the CD-Rom drive is working. It should be able to boot from a Windows recovery CD and run the Windows installation program. There is no problem with the drivers because Ubuntu has its own drivers. Maybe the firmware of the Drive, but I doubt it. Since your hard drive is brand new (scrubbed) you have nothing to lose by physically installing Ubuntu and playing with it to verify the hardware and possibly to update the firmware of the CD-Rom drive. When choosing the Ubuntu distribution do not use one with a version number higher than 12.04 LTS. I could not install version 12.10 on an old tablet PC for some hardware reason: The Ubuntu part was not working but KDE was fine.
When installing Ubuntu install grub on the C: drive. It will be wiped anyway when you reinstall Windows.
Good Luck.

I think you may know the answer already. It's a matter of sacrificing one of drives, if you can't purchase another drive right now.

Live boot with Ubuntu and copy just the data needed onto the other drive. You now have all the data on one drive allowing to wipe and reinstall XP on the other.

You may still have unresolved hardware problems, if the newly wiped drive blue screens again.

Seagate 7200.10 160 gb in dell desktop computer. worked fine for 2 years and then one day when turning on it could not be recognized by bios. tried in 2 other OS computers and and external enclosure and...

Now I'm not sure I'm going to be able to sort this out for you but I can think of a couple of things to try.

a) you mention 2 other O/S PC's.............if they've got XP on them, they're not going to work, XP can only see drives up to about 120 Gb.

b) Make sure the jumper setting on the back of the drive is set to "Slave" and try on a machine with Vista or later, Linux or a Mac.

c) If you don't have acces to the latter 2, try using Ubuntu, its a linux based operating system. Google Ubuntu, download the .iso file and burn it onto a CD. All the instructions are there.

d) insert the CD and reboot, with luck your bios is set to boot from a CD first. Ubuntu will start up and ask you if you want to try it or install it. Select "Try it". This should load Ubuntu without changing anything on your PC.

e) Once up and running, plug your disk in using the enclosure or if in your PC click on "Places" at the top of the screen, with luck, your hard drive is in the list.

After this, I'm stuck ................ good luck

How to remove Ubuntu from a Vista dual-boot config

On my new PC I wanted (still want) to have toa go with Linux. I chose to experiment with Ubuntu. I downloaded thedesktop CD, burned it, freed up some disk space (inside Vista) andloaded up Ubuntu from the CD. After some experimenting I figured outhow to install Ubuntu in the empty disk space and it all worked fine(GRUB took over my booting (recognized Vista automatically!) and Ubuntuloaded up fine).

Then I tried to install my GPU drivers andeverything went wrong.. For some reason Ubuntu wouldn't boot anymore(failed to load X-Server or something). I was completely lost andwanted to remove Ubuntu.

This is where things start to get really messy!

Ifyou simply remove the Ubuntu partition, GRUB (Linux boot loader) willstill be on your PC (in control). It will trip out, as the Ubuntupartition will be removed.. Bad thing!

So you need to restore your Master Boot Record (MBR) for Vista (so that Vista will handle the booting, not GRUB).

Googleonly pointed me to sites that explained how to REMOVE VISTA, whichisn't what I wanted. Many sites talked about the 'fixmbr' command, butthis is really only available in Windows XP.

So how do you restore your MBR for Windows Vista?

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr, and then press ENTER.

That'sit. Now when you reboot your PC, Vista will load automatically... Youcan now safely boot using your Ubuntu desktop CD, to use the built inGnome Partition Manager to remove your Ubuntu partition!

HD booting in one PC but not in another

Ubuntu works with RAM and CPU Memory instead of a pc like xp that uses Virtual RAM. If the pc that could not load ubuntu doesn't have enough ram to support the reading of the Hard drive and the Operating System then it won't work and Xp will only run on the computer that xp was installed onto the hard drive.
