Question about Brother HL 5140 Laser Printer

1 Answer

Fixing unit failure

The fixing unit failure of my Brother HL-5140 started after extracting a jammed page. Following the instructions in the manual has for a while restored the unit so I could print again a few pages until it fails again.  After taking the fixing unit out and cleaning a little build-up of dirt on the thermal sensor the unit worked again fine for a couple of weeks. Now the unit fails again after printing just one or two pages.  Should I replace the thermal sensor or the small circuit board it is connected to, if I can them? Where could I get them? The heating circuit must be intact because the printed output is fine when the printer works. Thanks for any advise.

Actually, replace them both, since the sensor and board are integrated...besides you'll find that the new set works better than one new, one old.

There's probably something wrong with the drum unit. I would check the manual on how to change the drum unit. Good luck!

How do you get a page count from an HL 5140/

On the HL-5140, you can print out a config page which will show the page count on it by pressing down the Go button (the blue button). Hold it for a few seconds, until the config page starts to print out.

To find configuration page instructions and page count tips for other printers, copiers, and fax machines, check out How to Print Configuration Pages.

Sounds like a fusing error ... If your able to wipe the toner off the page its a fuser unit problem (replace fuser unit) If toner is sticking to paper but the print quality is poor , replace the drum unit  (PCU)  good luck

Tonner flashing HL-5140- will not print at all, drivers are good

If you have the user manual look on page 3-1 for Control Panel. The different patterns of on/off/blinking lights indicate what the problem is. If the toner is flashing and status is green, your toner is low and should be replaced....

If you don't have the user manual it is at this link:

see page 3-1 or page 81

HL-5140 Brother laser printer red status light remains on.

The red lite indicates one of the following needs to be looked at:

Cover open (Front cover) Close the front cover.

Cover open (Jam clear cover) Close the jam clear cover of the fuser unit.

Memory full - Press the go button.

Print overrun - Press the go button.

Clean drum unit - Clean the corona wire.

HL-5140 paper jam

Perhaps look along the paper path for the little bit of paper that maybe stuck along the path somewhere. I had this problem and it was just a little piece of the corner of a page wedged in the back of the toner tray.

Non stop paper jams

I had this same problem. I finally noticied that the problem occurred consistently on the right side of the paper feed. I discovered that a little part along the right side of my drum unit (just inside the paper feed area) had disconnected and was loose inside the drum unit itself. Once this little part was placed back into it's rightful place, VOILA! Problem solved! Hope this helps!
