Both hard drive and CD drive can be purchased from your local technology store. For example, Futureshop or BestBuy.

You're looking for an internal IDE cd drive, and an internal IDE (NOT SATA) 3.5" hard drive. Get a 7200RPM hard drive for better performance.

example hard drive:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10035171&catid=10484

example cd drive. This is a cd/dvd read write combo drive:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10087822&catid=

you don't need the cd. you just need the drivers. download them from HP's website.

Adding a d drive causes the computer not to boot

You need to get your jumpers in order.

You have two drives that are probably both trying to be Masters. You need to set one of them to slave.

Let me know if you get stuck or need specifics.

Nldtr missing

Am I right in thinking you mean NTLDR and not NLDTR? If so here is the fix.

To fix the error on startup of NTLDR is missing in Win XP you should follow the steps below using a full version Win XP CD and the Recovery Console.
Insert the Windows CD and start the computer making sure the computer boots to the CD first.
When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R. (this may take a while to load)
Type a number corresponding to the Windows installation you wish to repair (usually 1) and press Enter. When prompted, type the administrator password and press Enter. (if no password was entered on you system then just press enter)
From the command prompt you want to copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from the i386 folder of the CD to the root folder of the hard drive. This is much easier than it sounds and can be done by typing the commands below.
In the examples below C: is presumed to be your hard drive and D: is presumed to be your CD drive. You will need to change the drive letters to your own if you have more than one drive. ( if you are having problems entering \ then try pressing the # key to see if that works)
Type these 2 commands exactly and press enter after each one.
COPY D:\I386\NTLDR C:\
COPY D:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
Now remove the Windows XP CD from the drive and restart the computer and your computer should now start normally.

Computer does not recognize the cd rom drives on this computer

Hello my name is Tim, It sounds like you may need to reinstall the drivers and get your pc to locate the drives, you can usually get these drivers from the manfacturers website or from download.com for free, if you have the install disks for the dvd burner and cd rom you can use another pc to load them onto a usb drive and then transfer them to your pc that way. You can also go to controll panel, then device manager, and try to locate it there to see if it needs any drivers. I hope this heled you, please feel free to ask more questions and I will try to help.

DVD NOT READ

if you are good at opening then open the combo drive and clean the lens once by using some lens cleaner solution and then refit it it should work ...

if you still persist the problem then think that the life of the combo drive is getting down and the time to purchase new one is getting nearer ..

after some days your combo drive will fail to read the cds but it will read occasionally for some days after that it will not read anything that s because the lens is becoming weaker ...

at the cost of replacing the lens you can purchase the new dvd writer ...

but also try cleaning the lens with some lens cleaner solution after that it may work for some days ..

the only problem with the combo drive is the lens will be weaker than the normal dvd writer or cd writer so after some days of usage it fails to detect dvds followed by it fails in detecting of cds too ...

thank you

What files do I copy???????????

I'm assuming you are using the memory stick for extra storage to free up space on your hard drive (or your C drive) or as a drive to back your files up on. A memory stick, when used the way you are describing, is nothing more than another drive to store stuff on (think of it as a smaller version of your C Drive) You can put any file type you want on it and then see it again as long as it is inserted in your computer.

If the purpose of the memory stick is to provide extra storage in order to free up space on your hard drive then yes, you will need to delete whatever you drag on to it from your hard drive. Otherwise the files will remain on your C drive/hard drive and continue to take up space. If you are only using the memory stick as a "just in case" backup drive, I would not delete them the files you copy from the source drive.

Let me caution you about doing this however, memory sticks are classified as "removable media". Media like this can sometimes be unstable or undependable. A more stable way to backup or store files long term is to copy them to a CD or DVD-ROM. In order to do that you need a CD or DVD writer. Most newer (within the last 3 years) computers come standard with this technology.
You may or may not have that capability.

The Itunes question is a whole 'nother line of answers. You can use your memory stick to back up your Itunes library but it will only be a back up. Because your Itunes software is linked to the files on your hard drive, all of your music files would still have to reside on your hard drive where they were originally.

If you want your Itunes library to reside solely on your memory stick (which in my opinion is not a good idea due to the instability of the memory stick) you would need to reconfigure Itunes to make it point to the library on your memory stick. It's definitely doable but gets kinda sticky in the transfer. Let me know if this is what you want to do with it and I can walk you through that.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions and good luck!

Help No bootable devices inspriron 600m

Bad news...it sounds like your hard drive is either dying or corrupted.

Here is what I would do first...Google "seatools" this is a set of software tools that you can use to test your hard drive. It's made by Seagate, but I've succesfully used it on other manufacturer's drives. Does you computer have a floppy drive? If not then you'll need to download the version of seatools that can be burned onto a CD. You'll also need software that will allow you to burn a "bootable" CD. If you don't have this capability and you don't have a floppy drive, then you're going to need to find someone who can burn the bootable CD for you.

Assuming you can get seatools put the CD (or floppy) in the computer and let follow the steps to let it test your hard drive. It's pretty straight forward.

If you're very lucky it may be able to fix your problems. If not you may need to reformat your hard drive or possibly you'll need a new hard drive.

If you have lots of important files on your computer that are not backed up then do not reformat the drive. Go buy a new one and install Windows on the new drive but also install the old drive. Many times the drive has problems that will prevent you from booting, but you can use it a bit longer as a second drive in the computer so you can recover your files.

I hope this all helps.

Can't run ati tv because of low bandwidth

what if you test that tv tuner in other pc and observe if it works. and if the same problem occurs you may just have to replace your tuner with the new one. onother thing that i can suggest is, check youre memory and video card if it works properly cause sometimes defective components like this can affect the performance of the other peripherals.
