Both hard drive and CD drive can be purchased from your local technology store. For example, Futureshop or BestBuy.

You're looking for an internal IDE cd drive, and an internal IDE (NOT SATA) 3.5" hard drive. Get a 7200RPM hard drive for better performance.

example hard drive:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10035171&catid=10484

example cd drive. This is a cd/dvd read write combo drive:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10087822&catid=

you don't need the cd. you just need the drivers. download them from HP's website.

Re: 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)

It is telling you that there is a problem with your hard drive. If you know how to get to your bios screen and have a recovery CD you should be able to restore it. That is IF the hard drive is in fact not defective. Otherwise you will need to to take it to someone who does computer repair and either let them replace the hard drive or depending on your ability do so yourself or purchase another laptop

When i plug in the usb to my computer it is not recognized and does not show anywher

If you have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive connected to your computer and you're experiencing problems with the external hard drive, there may be several reasons why it's malfunctioning. Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective. If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement. Incompatible USB Port Problems SimpleTech SimpleDrive plug and play options makes it easy for you to connect the device to your computer. But you may encounter problems if your computer's USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports are not compatible with the external hard drive. Make sure your ports are powerful enough to operate the drive. USB 2.0 ports are recommended, but if you're using an older computer with 1.0 ports, the hard drive will function much slower or you may receive an error message that the device is not compatible with your system. b> Missing External Drive Letter If you're unable to find the SimpleTech external hard drive's letter on your desktop after you have installed the drivers for the device, it's possible that the external drive may be assigned to another drive. Sometimes, the hard drive is assigned to a network drive and you may need to manually change the drive's letter in Disk Management. b> SimpleTech SimpleDrive Incorrectly Formatted b> SimpleTech SimpleDrive is normally pre-formatted for Windows NTFS (New Technology File System), but Mac users may need to copy the backup software and reformat the external hard drive for FAT32 or Mac OS to be able to use the external drive. If the external hard drive is not formatted correctly for your system, it may not function or work properly. b> External Hard Drive Inaccessible If you receive an error message that says "Drive Inaccessible," the SimpleTech SimpleDrive may not be able to read the service area of the platter. If the external hard drive emits a loud or abnormal sound, this could mean the device is failing.
Test the drive on another computer to see if it is working properly. Otherwise, the external hard drive's surface area may be damaged or corrupted.
Replacing a Defective Hard Drive You can return a defective hard drive that is under warranty to SimpleTech. The manufacturer will exchange the device if the seal is not broken. But if you break or tear the seal on the case, any warranty claims will not be accepted and the device will be returned back to you. SimpleTech will only accept the device if you contracted a commercial data recovery company to retrieve critical data from the external hard drive and the seal needed to be broken. Before returning the defective drive, you will need to secure a RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) approval number from SimpleTech and furnish any invoices or documentation regarding the data recovery company's services
or if its a usb external drive you might need a usb 3 card installed on your computer your computer might not have enough usb output power USB 3 card will provide more power when needed to the device to gain maximum throughput and conserve power when the device is connected but is idling http://blog.premiumusb.com/2010/09/usb-2-0-vs-usb-3-0/ these can be purchased on Ebay cheap and easy to install http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PCI-e-PCI-Express-USB3-0-Card-new-NEC-720200AF1-chipset-/330608109325?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf9c7670d for roughly $9 or $10free postage Hope this helps.

Your hard disk is bad. You will need to purchase a replacement one. If you need the data off of that disk contact a data recovery company to get the data back.

Why my dvd /cd not work properly , in hardware it show the it is woorking properly , but if i put any cd and insert it then after its not read the data in cd

Does the led on the dvd/cd drive flash after you've put in a disk? Go into "My Computer" and check that the drive is indicated there. If it isn't, then you would need to check the drive connector inside the computer to make sure it is connected properly and that it is not loose. If the drive is indicated in my computer, try another disk, perhaps a music cd, and see if the drive reads the disk. If it does, that tells you that you may have some defective disks. If the drive is detected in my computer, and no disks are read by the drive, then I would assume the drive is defective and replace it. Good luck!

I got a hard dish read error..

A hard disk read error is normally an indication of a failing hard drive. If you can, back up any important data because you will most likely need to replace the hard drive.

Sounds like cd r is skipping, the drive says there is no cd r installed but there is

how old is the drive? this sounds like a defective drive and will likely need to be replaced. If it is new then the mfg can replace it under warranty ( or you may be able to return it to the place of purchase for a replacement) if it is older than a year then in most cases you will just need to get a new one at any computer store or electronics store that sells them.

DST short status test failure

There is a few things you can do. You can purchase a new Windows CD from your favorite electronics store and install it. If you do that, you will have to visit the dell support site, put in your service code, and download all the drivers to install manually on your computer. If you purchase and install Windows 7, which is Microsoft's latest version of Windows, it should recognize most if not all drivers needed for your system.
In terms of backing up your system: Once you have purchased a new hard drive and loaded windows onto it, you can also purchase an external hard drive enclosure kit (one without a hard drive in it). Using this kit, you can take the hard drive out of your old system and put it into this kit. Plugging the device into the computer (after installing windows) you can then pull off all your old information.

A less expensive but not necessarily recommended short term solution would be to purchase the external hard drive enclosure kit, take the hard drive out of the system and put it into the kit, hook it up to another computer, right click on the drive in My Computer and select properties. In properties, click on tools tab, and then click "check now...". Make sure you select for it to repair any errors. This will probably (no guarantees) make your hard drive usable again, but only temporarily. Ultimately you do need to replace your hard drive.

Good Luck,

Hi

The ISO files need to be burned into a cd with a special program. Please use this software. http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm

Next, the reason why you are getting the error message is because the computer is not starting from the cd, or the cd was burned incorrectly.

The computer is most likely starting from the hard drive instead and since it's formatted you get the error message.

To get the computer to start from the cd instead and to install the system again, you need to adjust the boot order.

The laptop might have a Boot menu feature (look at the screen right when you power it on and see if it says anywhere press xx key to enter Boot menu) If you don't have the boot menu option then you need to enter setup or bios, same thing different name.

The computer will say at some part of the screen to press xx button to enter setup or bios / cmos.

In Bios you must adjust the boot order so that the Cd / dvd drive is before the hard drive in the order. this way the computer will start from the cd instead of trying the hard drive.

Here are a few good tutorial videos on the subject of changing the boot order.

How to Install Windows Part 1 of 2

boot order at middle and towards end of video.

Change Boot Order and Boot from a CD/DVD

Let me know if the problem is not solved or if you need further assistance.

Thank you,
Ekse
