I am trying to connect an Advent 772i LCD screen Model 780 to an ATI Radeon HD5770. I also have an old compaq v410 CRT attached to the same screen. The sytem does not detect the Advent screen (ie it is not behaving the way a PnP display should). It does detect the CRT and works fine with that. So am I missing an Advent PnP display driver or something like that
I am kind of at my wits end so any help would be appreciated

Unfortunately yes most likely the GPU is toast at this point. Sounds to me like it overheated. The XFX HD5770 isn't that great of a video card to begin with.
It really depends on your budget, if you play games, how much space you have inside the case and what PSU (power supply unit) you have. A good video card it's the ATI HD5750 or the ATI HD5770, it's not huge, and should play games, although maybe not with the maximum settings. If you want to go NVIDIA i would suggest a NVIDIA GTX560 or GTX460.
the monitors resolution range is only to 1280X740 or 780 and your video card may also need an upgrade. The game may require a higher resolution that is not compatible with the the devices mentioned.
Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop. After your computer is attached to an external monitor, press the <Fn> key and the <F8> (CRT, LCD) key to switch the video image to the display. If the external monitor works, the computer display or video controller may be defective. Your responses are intended to improve the level of service provided. what you have the ATI card hooked up can you see the boot screen? If you can see that you might want to try going into safe mode and making sure your graphics settings aren't set beyond the capability of your monitor. If you can't see the boot screen then your card might be dead.
