Just in case you have "lost" the instructions, I went to the Rowenta website and they are pretty specific as to how to work with the "3-way auto shutoff"...things such as " iron should always be turned to Min. before plugging" and " to switch iron on again, move the iron or gently shake it". It also says that you need to move the iron every 30 seconds when it is down on the face plate or tipped over...otherwise it shuts off. I was having the same problem, so took mine apart and it appears that they have use a mechanical "ball" motion detector instead of a mercury switch. That is good for the environment but bad for the iron, since it involves mechanical contacts that can become dirty or worn over time. Best thing I can add is to their instruction is that after taking it apart, I got it to work again, so smack it really good in different directions and try to free the "ball". Good luck!

Does it do anything at all when you turn it on? Some irons have lights that come on when they're warming, or already warm. Does it seem to react at all to being turned on?

Also, feel along the cord - is any part of it warm? If it is, there's a short in the cord keeping power from reaching the iron.

Well..let's check the plug..is it firmly in wall, and ** problems with the part going into the unit, as well?

does the light that shows power work on the panel, under the handle?

has the unit dropped recently?

I have a B&D 2030 steam iron which I really like, but recently it isn't always turning on when plugged in. I think there may be a short in the cord somewhere, possibly the plug?? It seems to work...

Likely the wire inside the cord is broken from lots of use. You can usually tell where by turning the iron on while plugged in and bending the cord. You will hear a spark when you bend the spot with the break. It isn't very difficult to replace the cord with a new one.
