Thanks for the help. I found the hard drive will not accept anything bigger than 4 gig because of the FAT16 formatting. Changing this to NTFS using windows conversion fixed the problem for me. The code for this can be found online at iomega solutions changing to NTFS.

Go into Device Manager and into the properties of the drive, then Power Mangement and tell Windows not to allow power to be reduced to save energy.

Well..allowing is maybe close, but this is most likely a bandwidth from the laptop to the external drive..how do you have them connected? USB Ethernet? for that type of file size, you may find Enet to be the best, or USB 2.0

Cannot copy files to Iomega 500 GB external hard drive.

It depends on how you formatted the the drive.
If it was formatted FAT it will work on both Mac and PC.
If you formatted to HFS+ (the native mac format) then it will only work on a mac.

Iomega 500 gb hard drive: large file transfers

The default format for the IOMega drive is FAT32. This format will work on all versions of Windows, as well as Mac OS9 and above. Unfortunately, FAT32 can't handle files larger than 4gigs. If you want to use larger files, you're going to have to remove all the files from your IOMega drive and use your computer to format it to NTFS (Windows 2000/XP/Vista) or HFS+ (Mac OS9/X).

Consult your owner's manual for specific details.
