Question about Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera
I have a Canon Digital Rebel Xti. The 18- 55mm lens will not shoot on auto focus, but will on Manual focus. The camera shoots fine with my other lenses. I have cleaned the contact points of the lens with an eraser, but not sure what else to do. :)
I was shooting a series of indoor shots (EOS Rebel XT) today when right in the middle of the shoot my 18-55 (auto focus) just stop allowing for the shot. It goes through the focussing motion but won't shoot or even pre-fire the flash. I also cleaned the contacts with ** results. Switched to a 75-300 lense (auto focus) and it works fine. I've also been getting the error 99 since December on the 18-55 lense.
Talked to canon support, they suggested to send lense in for review/repair. They said it could be the motor, I think it was a gear problem based on the noises and jerkiness of the focusing action while in manual focus (manual focus gave out as well). Cost TBD - "would definately be more than $50. I shopped around and elected to buy a new lense rather than try to hassle with the repair, shipping, insurance, and the wait, etc. Besides, I have a deadline that I need the lense for, so repair at Canon really became a non-option. I think the cost would've been pretty much the same in the end as the new lense, since this wasn't one of the costlier of lenses to begin with.
