Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console
How do u fix the red ring of death!
Www.ThreeRedLightsFix.com I found, don't know if it works
you most likely will have to send it in to get fixed otherwise which is what I know some guys have done that have had this happen, mine hasn't had this problem yet

Only way would be to open up the xbox 360, get the heatsinks off of the board and use a heatgun and reheat the two chips that are underneath the heatsinks that you take off.
Problem with the 360's is that they use crappy solder to put the video chips on the board and the solder underneath breaks apart after a while cause of the heat that is generated by the machine. Reheating the two video chips allows the solder to reflow properly and then you can turn on the machine and get video again.

Free fixes? Impossible.
What causes the ROD is a loose processor. You can buy a better part and install it. I believe there should be a YouTube Video on this. There should be parts on eBay.
I hope this helped.

Well the why part of your question can be answered here - http://www.xbox.com/en-US/search.aspx?keyword=one+red+light
They go into many of the error codes, as to how to fix it without voiding the warranty; If it's under warranty send it in to be fixed, or if you're dying to play right now try the 'towel method' shown here -
Beware- purposefully overheating your xbox 360 may damage your system further.

just let it cool down,
two red light means that the internal temperature for the console just exceeded..
let it cooldown for a day..
when you use it, make sure there is no appliance near it...

I tried to follow some video tutorials from youtube but none of them worked. So I realised I'd have to spend some money on real tutorials and tools. I was a little sceptical but I bought it any way and it worked just fine.
Eventually you'll have to spend some money on it. I recommend you get your hands on this set, you'll get your guides and tolls and it's all you need to fix it at home.
