Make sure it is unplugged and powered off and battery removed before removing screws.
the screws are small so you will need a small screwdriver Usually Phillips head
There may or may not be a memory module in there already. Make sure to research proper memory size - speed and brand before upgrading.
You will be removing the keyboard and other components make sure to note where they go and dont pull too hard
Here is the manual and go to page 67

Upgrade RAM in my laptop

Most laptops have a panel on the bottom of the laptop where the RAM is located. Remove this panel to get access to the RAM slot/s. If there are two RAM slots then you can insert larger RAM modules in these slots to increase your RAM requirements.

Want to upgrade memory. will I lose my existing memory

I assume you are upgrading the RAM (Random Access Memory), the Ram is also called a memory stick because it looks like a stick, the stored data is kept on the Hard Drive, if that is upgraded then yes you will loose the memory, but not if you upgrade the Ram

Dell Inspiron 2200 Ram Upgrade Help

I have worked on several I2200s and never encountered the Plate you mentioned. The vented memory door: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins2200/en/SM/upgrades.htm#1084976
Should rotate away from the chassis and expose the memory slot.

Need disassembly instructions to install additional RAM

If the ram is upgradeable, there should be an access port on the bottom that can easily be removed. Open all access ports until you find the one for ram. Then you should be able to upgrade the ram.

Reg ram upgradation

Each memory slot on the C555NR can support a maximum of 1GB of RAM. There are actually 2 slots, but only one is easily accessible to you. By upgrading both the primary and secondary DIMMs, you could achieve a total of 2GB of memory but you would have to remove the 512mb chip that is already installed and replace it with 1GB (+1GB in the expansion slot as well.)

If you don't plan on taking the computer to a professional to be serviced, you will probably only want to upgrade the memory in the secondary slot located under the memory cover on the underside of the computer. It can handle a 1GB SODIMM.

FYI the memory is:
200 Pin DDR2-533 PC2-4200 SODIMM

Good luck!
