If the compressor comes on, then it is most likely working, unless it makes a loud humming noise. However, if it makes a clicking noise, it could have a bad relay. If the compressor gets too hot, it will shut itself off on overload until it's cool enough to run again, which is usually long enough to defrost your food.

You may have a problem in your sealed system. If this is the case, there may be a refrigerant leak somewhere. If this is the case, you should have a technician come out. Your sealed system should be covered under warranty if your refrigerator is under 5 years old.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about this.

Let me rephrase about the relay. It will click on then off quickly. It makes a clicking noise normally when it comes on, and then off. If it comes on and off constantly, this is usually a sign of a bad relay.

You can ohm the compressor to see if it is shorted but if the compressor is running it cannot be the overload or relay , if not running sometimes you can pull the relay and shake it if you hear any rattling in it it is bad

Hello, I read your problem and a couple things here. First of you said motor was hot and then was built up and dirty. That is why motor is hot, because it was overworking itself. When things get dirty or caked up, compressor will still run slot of times but not go in to high speed full capacity, even after you clean it and must clean coils too real good, you then have to make sure motor is cool, before starting it up again. If it still won't cool and everything is cleaned good, then most likely you will have to replace your capacitor and starter relay, that is the components you see connected to the compressor , its easy to find as just follow the electrical wires that connect to those that are plugged into the motor/compressor. The parts are not to expensive and a do it yourself job. But before you replace the starter relay and capacitor try making sure coils also are real clean and motor cool, unplug fridge for hour or so. Oh and don't forget to unplug when working on it. By the way what the starter relay does is give the compressor a burst or amps to trigger compressor on high. Think of it as a booster. Have a great evening. Mike

GE refridgerator won't cool

First of all check and see if the compressor is running and if not is it very hot to the touch. If the compressor is not running but hot then the compressor is either locked up or is cycling on its internal thermal overload. If this is the case then either the condenser fan motor is not running and/or the condenser coil is very dirty. If the condenser coil is dirty you need to blow it out with compressed air(watch out for all the blowing dust). If the compressor has been cycling alot on its internal thermal it will eventually lock up permanently and you will need a new compressor. I hope I was of some assistance to you!

Frig is warming while freezer is staying cold.

No, A compressor will get hot for about three reasons.

Low refridgerant.
Lack of airflow, (maybe due to very dirty coils or bad condensor coil fan on modes with a fan)
Or high amp draw. (which would mean you have a bad compressor)

Its more common to be one of the first two, especially low refridgerant.

If the coils were really dirty, the compressor is probably just overheated. Let it cool down overnight then try again. If it still won't stay running it needs serviced. Could be the start relay or internal overload/overheat sensor in the compressor. If the coils were really dirty and it was used like this for a long time, the compressor could be damaged. It is almost never worth replacing a compressor in a home refrigerator.
