How to replace gears myself?

Agitator won't move, repair person said sounds like one of the gears is stripped and that if we want to take it apart we can do it ourselves. How do we get to the gears? It is a Maytag top loader washing machine.

Just went through an agitator problem with my MAV7700AWW Atlantis. You are talking about the main (bottom) agitator, not the corkscrew part up top, right? If so, you can check this site to see how to access parts inside your washer. I found it very helpful: http://www.geocities.com/maytagrepairwasher/
I too, had visions of replacing stripped gears, but after searching the internet for a few days, decided to buy a new transmission, replace it, and then tear in to my old one and repair it and then have the original for a spare.
I found a NEW transmission and tub seal kit for under $120 including shipping to my door.
If you have an Atlantis, then the following information will be very helpful. Otherwise, you may find that you have a transmission that can be serviced more easily.
When I finally got the old transmission out I was very happy with my decision. I cannot see how it comes apart - no screws, bolts, clips, or clamps. It is an upper and lower half that appears to be gooped together by a blue sealant. The new transmission appears to have the halves crimped together - maybe it is a serviceable part, but it is not very user friendly.
If you decide to tackle the job, I can offer a few tips on alternative tools and also on disassembly of the brake.

Will not Agitate (Frigidaire GLWS1233AS1) The washer fills and then stops. If I manually change the timer to the end of the cycle it drains and can spin. I saw on older posts that this might be a...

Hello,

When ya say after filling "the washer stops" does that mean it is not making any sorta sound?? if it is the transmission, agitator block,or evena stripped gear you will hear the motor running yet it will not agaitate and from reading your question i think it says their is no sounds yet instead it fills then just sits their silent,is that so??

If yes their is no sounds it could be in the area of the timer where the problem lies, since it will drain/spin i am exluding the motor, lid switch or belt as the problem.

If it does make sounds yet just wont agitate it could be a stripped agitator block, or stripped gear but,the belt would be ok since it spins

Won't agitat under agitator yellow coupling held by 7/16 bolt should this spin freely or does this mean its stripped

it probably means that it's stripped. it grips the spine and allows movement of the agitator. the transmission shaft may be rotating back and forth, but the agitator doesnt move properly. i would remove the coupling and take a look underneath it to see if it's stripped.

Possible transmisson

motr coupling easy to turn??? did you look at closle ( sometimes appears intact, but the center of teh shaft is stripped allowing the motor to "slip" through giving what could amount to a stripped gear sound. the newest motor couplin (285753a) has a meatal sleeve to prevent such a thing from happening

Washer won't agitate

With all other aspects working... The inside of the agitator--where the transmission shaft attaches--can become worn, and strip out the spline that allows the agitator to properly grip the shaft. Then the transmission shaft rotates back and forth as it should, but the agitator doesn't move properly. If this happens, you may need to replace the agitator and/or the transmission spline. It is still cheaper to pay the repairman and part replacement then a whole new unit, When calling a repair person tell them that your machine will spin but no aggitation, don't tell them you think... most are honest and fair, to save some if you can take the machine to the repair shop it will save you some service charges.

I have a sears kenmore elite washer mod# 110 20952991, and the agitator works, but doesn't move around, sounds like it is stripped ! Help !!

If the entire agitator is not moving you will have to replace it. If the top is not working properly, you will need the 4 little gears inside the top calle d agitator dogs. The set of four cost about $8.00 and are available at any appliance parts store. To get to the agitator dogs you will remove your fabric softner dispenceer, if you have one. Then pop off the top lid of the agitator. It will have a small spot to insert a screwdriver and pop it off. Then reach down inside the agitator and pull out the next little cover. Be carefull not to loose the seal. Then you will need to unscrew the bolt that you see in the bottom. Once you have done that the agitator will lift off. The top will not pop off the bottom and you will be able to see the four little tear shaped gears called DOGS. I love the name. You should be able to install the new ones fairly easily and then just line the top of tha agitator up with the bottom and push it back down into place. If you look down inside the agitator you will see two little clips that you will need to line up. It is really an easy repair. Let me know if you have any other questions.I hope this will FixYa. Please rate me when you can. Mike

either you have something stuck betwwen the two tubs(ie. a sock. ) preventing the tub from free spinning.or there is a clutch mounted on top of the transmission not engaging, as far the agitator not spinning correctly sounds liek the agitaor dawgs are stripped preventing proper agitaing(bottom of agitator works fine but upper portion free spins both ways without resistance?? correct??
