Intermittent internet disconnection, yet internet is fine
We have checked the modem, there is no downtime with the internet, its our router I think, my husband already reconfigured the modem, made new settings and its working fine at first.
But after awhile, it started acting up. Connection will be lost in like a few seconds, then it will get back up again. States that the connection is only local.
The router still has all of its indicator lights on. The ISP is ok, we tried connecting using LAN.
Please help. Thanks alot.
Re: Intermittent internet disconnection, yet internet is...
Please check the firmware of your router first. in most of the Wireless router the connection dropping issue is due to old firmware, also try chaning the wireless channel to 9 under the 2.4 GHz network to optimise the Wireless connection.

Try this:
1.turn off power and disconnect all wires and cable to and from modem.
2.re-connect after 2 minutes.
3.do the modem buttons light up, including internet.?
4.now check if you get internet connection. you don;t need the wiz because you are hard wired thru cable from ISP?
GOODLUCK
Having intermittent internet disconnects? There could be a couple of causes for this issue. Your internet could be degraded when it gets to your house causing disconnects. You will have to contact your Internet Service Provider in order to have them resolve this issue. Normally, they will replace splitters and may even replace lines outside of your house. You could also be having problems with the modem directly. The may replace this. If you have a modem that you bought that was not provided by your ISP, you can try to update the firmware on the modem.
If using a modem I recommend you unplug the router, plug the computer directly in the modem and see if you still have the problem. If you still have the problem then you know it is just the modem. If the problem resolves itself then you know the most likely culprit is the router.
I would also recommend that you update your router firmware as well. Do a google search for the brand name of the router and go to the companies website, look in the support/downloads section for updated software. --If possible, try a different Ethernet port on your router. You may have a bad port. --Take out and reinsert all Ethernet cables on your network. Loose cables can cause disconnects. --If possible, replace the Ethernet cables. Bad cables can cause this.
Lastly, you could be having an issue with the Network card(NIC) on your computer. Network cards are either built into the modem or external(a card you insert into the motherboard). Using the process of elimination and the steps above, you can hopefully narrow down the problem to one specific component of your network.

its not to hard if you have a physical ethernet cord from point A to point B
Modem/Router ---ethernet cable--> 2nd router with dhcp off
as a bonus if you use the EXACT same SSID and password your wireless device will rome with no downtime switching networks
(oh.. very important to make certain they don't have the same IP. if main 1 is 192.168.1.1 then set the second to 192.168.1.2)
ta-da twice the network but all your devices think its all one
Intermittent
connection issues are very difficult for internet service providers to
trouble shoot. The first step in trouble shooing any Intermittent
connection problem is to look at the chain of equipment involved in flow
of data from the internet service provider to the end user. In most
homes the packets enter from the main cable line to the modem, than from the
modem to the router, and finally from the router to you computer. So
that means that the issue can be caused from the following equipment:
main cable line, splitter, modem, router, or the Ethernet / wireless
card of the PC. Since we know that the connection is being dropped at or before the modem I
recommend contacting the internet service provider and demand a service
call to swap the modem and check the pole. Your issue can be cause by some thing
as simple as a bad splitter in the home or some thing as complicated at
an issue at the pole. Most commonly this will turn out to be a bad modem.
I hope that information above has helped is some way. If possible please rate this solution.
Hope the modem is and ADSL or any other Internet modem. Plug the modem ethernet cable into the WAN port on the router. Go into
the router and configure PPoE with username and password. Set up a LAN
connection to the router on your computer. Make sure that your firewall
is not blocking the router internet connection.
If the port is not lighting up, it may be a dead port. You have to check the ip addresses. I thinks that might be the problem. You can check using Start_>RUN->cmd and hit enter. The type ipconfig /all. Check the ip address settings. If they are in different subnets, you have to configure it. I think your router assigns dhcp addresses. Modem is assigned an ip address from the Internet Service Provider. What you have to do is get a browser and go type the router address. Then authenticate yourself and change wan settings. Configure everything there to use the modem as a part of the router. (ISP information should be provided there). Then make sure that your router doesn't assign a dhcp addres to the modem. Try to configure and check. Hope this would help you. :) tc
When you are hardwired to the router you should disable the wireless internet access and enable the local area network. You should do the opposite when you are trying to connect to your router wireless.
Who is your ISP?
It seems you are experiencing intermittent connection. Bypass the router and check if the same problem exist when connected directly to the modem. If the internet works fine with the modem.then you have to configure the router correctly.
Check to see if you are losing the DSL or Internet light on the modem when you lose your onnection. If so, then check with your IP provider, that may be the problem.
did you ping to your default router ip address, if yes what is the output
