Found a great repair guide that also has follow along videos. It was an easy fix, and my xbox has been working now for 3 months with this fix. I've also fixed several other XBox 360s using the same guide.
Now I'm using the guide to buy broken xbox 360s off of ebay and sell them back for big profits.

An orange light is illuminated on the power supply for one of two reasons. Either the console is turned off or the power supply is disconnected from the console. The orange light means that the power supply is in standby. Even if the console is turned off, the power supply light may still be illuminated orange. This can occur if the power supply cord is not fully inserted into the power socket of the console. Click Here For Toubleshooting My YouTube Click Here For Live Tech Support
Is the light on the power supply amber? Should be amber when system is off, green when on. If the power supply checks out ok call 1-800-4MYXBOX for warranty repair. Out of warranty repairs call 1-800-479-4620
try this I know its a little annoying but its useful trust me. The orange light usually means a problem with the power supply. This means WORST CARE SCENARIO you have to replace the power brick but you 99% dont have to get a new xbox. http://support.xbox.com/en-us/pages/xbox-360/troubleshoot/hardware/power.aspx cheers!
When the Xbox 360 power supply light is orange or yellow this means there is no problem with your console but the power supply can't supply it with power.
To remedy this problem, first try unplugging the Xbox 360 power supply from the console and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. You'll also want to uplug the Xbox 360 power supply from the power cord.
Wait for about five minutes and then reconnect everything. You might also want to try plugging it into another wall outlet without an extension cord.
If you are still getting an orange or yellow indicator light, then something is at fault with the Xbox 360 power supply. If this is the case, contact the Xbox 360 customer support to get a new one. Hope this helps you out! Don't forget to rate me :)
Amber light is ok its when its red that is the problem, this might be your 360 that is faulty and until we have a closer look we would not be able to help further. You could try a different power supply from a mate, if the console works with a different power supply then you know its your supply thats faulty. but if the 360 still will not turn on then its the 360 at fault. Be carefull when using different power supplies as there are currently i think 4 different revisions and all have different power ratings. We could look at this for you www.fixmyconsole.co.uk
