I installed a new SD but did not format the card immediately. I shot a number of pictures and movies but discovered that they were not recorded anywhere. The manual refers to internal memory and that pictures will (I hope) will be recorded internally. I can't figure out how to access the pictures that I took prior to formatting the new SD card.

I find it when my Seagate hard drive was formatted by my friend and it helps me restore most of my drive videos, files and images.
So, it can also be useful for you.
From now on, make SD card data backups all the time.
If your computer has a built in card reader you can put any photo back on the card from your computer by dragging and dropping the file to the drive letter that is your SD card. If you're trying to recover lost photos from a SD card Google "card recovery pro". It's a free program that will read your SD card and restore as many photo's as it can.
This indicates that your SD card is full and should be replaced with an empty card. If the new card has never been used before, be sure to format it. If you don't have another card, download the pictures from the full card then erase or format the card and you can then reinstall it in the camera. The numbers on the lower left side of the control panel show the number of shots remaining on the SD card.
Take out memory card, and connect it to computer using a card reader. You should see memory card shown as a drive letter (like H:) in Windows Explorer. You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.
First of all, do not save any new file to camera's memory card.

I have meet a lot of people asking similar question. The answer is absolutely Yes. You can always recover the lost photos from your digital camera even you have formatted the device. Formatting won't make the data in your memory card erased permanently. The pictures you formatted are still in the disk of your memory card, just not accessible right now.
The best way to recover them back is trying some photo recovery programs. A nice one is Asoftech Photo Recovery that helped me before. http://www.asoftech.com/apr/
This program can deep scan to find your lost photos first and then perform recovery with nice quality. But before your photos are recovered, please don't take more photos in case your lost photo data are overwritten.
