Depends which router it is. Security settings are usually in the router software that comes with it.
You may need to enable wep or better wpa.
Read you instruction book on how to access the routers settings.
It's usually a case of typing an ip address in the address bar of Internet explorer to access them. But if you don't have the manual that comes with it you should find it on the net by typing the make and model number followed by the word manual or user manual in google.

My neighbor who has a Toshiba laptop computer is unable to sign onto the internet using my wireless. It does not even bring up my wireless as an option. Can you help us with a solution

If your neighbor cannot see your wireless network then he is most likely too far away from your wireless router to get a decent signal and therefore signing onto your network won't help at all..

How do i get my wep key

you should use wpa2, its much stronger than wep, and you choose your own password.
Wep gives you a key.
Log into your router. If you dont know how to do this google your router and it will tell you how to do it.
My router is accessed by typing 192.168.0.1 into my browser.
you then need to know the log in name and password, sometimes printed onto the router, my default was admin and no password, sometimes administrator and password is password .
look for wifi security and your setting are there. this site has most router models instructions http://www.routerpasswords.com/

I am getting ready to switch from dial-up to satellite internet service, I have a Compaq Presario SR1730T and need to know what type of wireless router is best or will any wireless router be compatible????

Usually the internet service provider (even satellite) provides a modem/router to access the internet. This being said to purchase a wireless router must mean that you are going to "broadcast" your satellite internet throughout the house so that others in the house can access the internet.

In that case, no it doesn't really matter what kind of wireless router to buy. Just make sure you connect your satellite modem/router (what they send you) into the wireless router correctly. Also, make sure you put a password on that wireless router so that your neighbors or unknown persons do not gain access to your internet/computer.

Thanks.

Double check your router settings to make sure your USB wireless adapter is permitted to use your wireless connection. You will probably find this under wireless security settings. I set up my wireless routers to only allow mac addresses of devices I specify, to prevent drive-by or neighbors using my connection.

I have a inspiron 1521 and i have 1 bar from my nabors router and i cant log on but all my other laptops conect

You can use the wireless configuration tool on the other laptops to determine all necessary settings except one: the WEP or WPA key. Match your new laptop's settings to one that works. If you need the key, you'll have to ask your neighbor. If you don't need a key, you should not take advantage of your neighbor by using his internet without permission.

Wireless connection stopped working

You may have a not very friendly neighbor, who has changed your setup in the router.
But, - you have the router, - what you have to do, is to find the "reset" on the back of the router, press and hold for about 30 seconds, and you have reset it to factory standard.
DO SET THE ADMIN password as the first thing you do, as this is why you neighbor could access your router.
THEN set some kind of security, to keep your neighbor from using your connection....
I will gladly help you with that to.

- do vote, as this IS helpful :-)

I have two Comcast cable internet lines in my house. One is for business, the other is personal. I have two modems and two wireless routers for each. I want to consolidate into one modem (business), and...

You need to talk to your comcast supplier and see if they will set up dedicated IP's coming in one line then you would need to put a hub between the comcast cable modem and the 2 routers. Then each router is set to having the dedicated IP address in their setup.

This is a general answer but its the basics necessary. I don't know if you are comfortable in this "depth" of setup and configs. But its what you need to do.

My neighbor is using the signal from my modem. is there a solution to this?

Hi,

Two (2) ways:
1. Use WEP or WPA security key (but that has been known to cause a slowdown);
2. Use MAC filtering which will restrict devices whose MAC numbers are entered into a table of allowed PCs.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
