When they ran the diagnostic test they told me it was a hardware problem.

  • Carl B Mar 10, 2008

The problem is still there, and it doesn't appear to be in the cd-dvd rom drive.I don't have a 3.5 diskette drive so it can't be that. The ticking still is constant and it interfears with the sound causing it to skip.Thank you for trying.

    geikogirl and poormanspc:

Thank you both for replying to my question about my Acer 5520 and it's ticking. I finally got through to Acer and they sent me to Best Buy and there the Geek squad determined that it was a hardware problem so they are sending the laptop back to Acer.

Again I thank you both for your help.

Does it happen when you're running a cd? Or all the time?

Is this clicking when you're click on items on your screen? Or is it coming from the computer's hardware?

It's probably your hard drive. I'd suggest getting a replacement as the ticking can be sign that it's going to fail soon, and sometimes won't show in software-based diagnostic trials.

Only a couple of things in your computer that will click, that would be your hard drive or your cd-dvd rom.or if you have a disk in your 3.5 diskette drive.

Let me know how it goes.

Insert your restore CD if errors are found and not fixed by the checkdisk function listed above. Turn your computer off and then back on. You'll beasked to hit any button to boot from your CD; press any key. You will then beasked if you want to install a fresh version of your OS or "Repair" acurrent copy. Choose the "Repair" option.

I have a Acer Aspire 5520 laptop and i updated the bios using a flash utility off the manufacturers web site and when it booted back up it would lock up my mouse and keyboard for like 10 min. at a time. So...

Short of removing the bios chip and replacing it with an exact replacement off of another mobo or using an EEPROM to reprogram it... nothing except replace the motherboard.

Acer Aspire 5520 Vista Cannot Read Disc no matter what

You probably need to swap it out, lasers and spindle motors often go bad.
Get a new drive off ebay (you can even upgrade to lightscribe for like 10$ more at this point): http://shop.ebay.com/items/?_nkw=Acer+Aspire+5520+cd+drive
Looks like you need to take the keyboard off and unscrew the screw holding the cd-drive in.

Acer 5520 restore failed 0xa000000e

I got it to work by deleting all the partitions on my drive (I first loaded xp, loaded system commander 9, and used that to delete all the partitions.)

Then while booting from the recovery cd, holding down alt-f10, the recovery dialog said it was partitioning the drive. (I didn't see this before, even if I partitioned the drive like it came from the factory.)

Then the rest of the recovery worked.

A hard disk problem is preventing windows from starting.

The black screen with flashing cursor can be caused by the files needed to boot being located in sectors of the hard drive that can no longer be read.

You can try booting to the XP CD, and go to recovery console and RUN CHKDSK /F See if that fixes the file structure and allows the system to boot. If that fails, you can try a repair installation of Windows. If that fails, the most likely resolution is replacing the HDD and reloading Windows and the drivers.
