I think you have to use the combo because each has sensor. trying to use just wireless mouse on a laptop might not work because your laptop cannot read the signal from mouse. Now check if both have bluetooth as that may work.
If the power cells are new, both the keyboard and mouse are powered correctly (Battery I assume are positioned correctly). If Neither one operates, then check the small dongle that fits into the USB port. It may have been loosened, and if so just pull it from the port and reinsert it in another port. If still no connection, then the dongle may have burned out. The problem: Once a dongle is spent, the entire set is useless as they operated on an audio signal (Frequency) set for that mouse/keyboard. No replacements.
Unfortunately, this switch has a dedicated port for keyboard that listens for the keyboard keystroke. You MUST plug the keyboard into the dedicated keyboard port on the KVM switch for the hotkeys to work. I recommend putting the mouse that comes with your keyboard to the side, and using another mouse, plugged into the dedicated mouse USB port on the switch. Not the prettiest solution, but some of those mouse/keyboard combos have some funky hardware!
Move the wireless adapter (one end connects to the keyboard/mouse ports on your computer) closer to the front of your computer, i.e., closer to where your wireless KB/mouse are located.
