What is the proper way to stat a gas 3 wheel Harley...

I have a 3 wheel Harley gas cart. There is ** neutral, just gas and brake plus a shift lever from forward or reverse with ** neutral inbetween. I find when trying to start it, it jerks along until it finally starts to fire, but in the process, it almost kills the battery. Any suggestions to make staeting easier and quicker?
