Question about Philips 60PP9202 60" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Tv convergence I have a Philips 60pp9202 and the green seems somewhat hour glass shaped it is the one that you cant move during manual convergence. would this be the convergence IC's or would this be something different. I can converge red and blue to make it better but you can tell on the top and bottom the picture is wavy a bit.

You will need to have a qualified technician replace the convergence IC's and possibly 2 resistors
If you are somewhat experienced with properly unsoldering the old parts without damaging the pc board you can replace the IC's yourself.
Most Philips CRT Projection televisions use 2 generic number STK392-120. These are mounted on a large aluminum heat sink
and soldered to the bottom of the pc board
There are sometimes 2 or more resistors that may be burned most often these are 6.8 ohm 1 watt

These parts can be found at www.tritonicsinc.com be sure to get the "original Sanyo" or the Philips brand, do not use the cheaper versions that come from China

good luck

Hourglass Shape

If there is a hour glass shape to the image but convergence is normal, there are 2 possibilities. You either have a pincushion correction problem or if the hour glass seems to be moving, it will be an open filter capacitor in the power supply.

Unless you are electronically inclined troubleshooting this issue will require a factory trained service technician. You can expect to spend $300-$400 to fix this.

Philips 60PP9202/17F.....The convergence is out of whack... was able to partially line up the red....can only move from left to right with compatiable remote...can't move up or down..Don't have the manual...

You need to replace the convergence ICs they are located on the large aluminum heat sink on the circuit board on the left. Either STK392-110 or STK392-120 are used in that chassis. And you can order them at this link and they provide free step by step instructions with pictures so you can do the repair yourself in about an hour. Heres the link. Just look for your stk numbers under the convergence IC section you will need to replace both of The ICs. If you need to know what they look like heres a pic.

replace the convergence ICs STK392-120 you will need both of them also check the 6.8 ohm resistors right next to the ICs as often 1 or 2 of them burn open. You should be able to notice the discoloration in the center of the resistors.

Do not adjust any knobs as instucted in the previous thread if you TV have a convergence problem. Doing so will only make things worse. The blog does however show you how to fix other common problems with these sets.

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Convergence problem with philips 60 in.

depending on how old it is, it will either have a special menu (you will need to enter service mode to access it, need model number for that), or a panel in the back that you remove a few screws to gain access to. If it is the panel in the back, you will see about 20-50 little potentiometers, that have a slot in the top. Go to Radioshack, buy a TV alignment kit, stock number 64-2230. The pots will be in rows and columns, usually...and they should be labeled. Find the column/row for the red, and the pot for pincushion, which is the issue you are describing. With someone looking at the TV, and it on, turn that pot until the pincushion looks normal.
