Want to upgrade my HP TouchSmart IQ504 Desktop PC 2.0GHz processor for a 3.1 ghz ?

First, have you ever changed/upgraded a CPU? It take quite a bit of research to upgrage. If you look at this spec of the Mobo your options are very limited, The Mobo only supports 2 different type Processors, 1, Core 2 Duo (Merom); http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/2683/Merom , 2 Core 2 Duo (Penryn): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penryn_(microprocessor) If you have a 64bit OS consider a memory upgrade, if you haven't already. I have been given a acer aspire L320 BUT THERE IS NOT A PROCESSOR IN IT. what i want to know is what processor fits.it

The Acer Aspire L320 can take 3 different processors

1. Intel Core 2 Duo

Dual Core chip with speeds from 1.8Ghz to 3.3 Ghz

2. Intel Celeron D

Dual Core chip with speeds from 1.6Ghz to 2.7Ghz

3. Intel Pentium 4

Single core chip with speeds from 1.3Ghz to 3.8Ghz

The Core 2 Duo 3.3 Ghz is the most expensive and Pentium 4 1.3 Ghz the cheapest.

Some more information is available on the Intel website, links are below:

Can I upgrade my CPU to an Intel Core 2 duo 1.7

You are basically limited to what was optional on the model. So you can only upgrade to one of the following cpus:

Intel Pentium M 745 (1.8-GHz) with 400-MHz front
side bus (FSB)
Intel Pentium M 735 (1.7-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Pentium M 725 (1.6-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Pentium M 710 TJ85 (1.4-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB;
operates at a lower temperature than other processors
Intel Celeron M 340 (1.5-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB
Intel Celeron M 330 (1.4-GHz) with 400-MHz FSB

And you are limted to 2gb of ram max on this model.

Your computer has one of these options:

(1MB L2 cache, 2.13GHz, 533MHz FSB)
or
Intel® Celeron® Processor 550
(1MB L2 cache, 2.0GHz, 533MHz FSB)
or
Intel® Celeron® Processor 540

or
Intel® Celeron® Dual-Core Processor T1400

Check the features with Acer first and see if your motherboard model support that speed processor.

Processor

I told you my opinion, If I was in your shoes I won't upgrade the CPU.Professionals do not do works against Factory specifications, and I fixcomputers for living.
Acer says Pentium dual is not supported on Acer 4315, I can only tell you not to do such an upgrade.
Itwould be the same as if you ask me if you can mount a Jaguar engine ona Mini, yes, for sure there is the way to mount it, but the car won'twork as it is supposed to, and risk to blow at first corner.
If you really want to replace your CPU consider the following.
Acersays pentium 2 dual core is not supported on 4315, if you do ityourself you risk to damage the computer. Do not do the CPU upgrade ifthis is your only laptop, or if you care of this laptop, chance ofdamaging laptop are high. This kind of upgrades are done more as anexperiment.
I know Core 2 Duo T5300 1.73 Ghz had been installedsuccessfully on Aspire 4315, Acer says not to install any core duo, Iknow for sure Pentium duo T5200 1.6 Ghz works on Aspire 4315 with noneed for replacing cooling system.
Both chipset are difficult to find, best place to find them is Ebay.

Check this link for an extensive report on this matter:

Re aspire 7104 being upgraded to duo core processor

No it cant be updated

Your acer aspire is based on the 910GML chipset

The Mobile Intel® 910GML Express chipset is optimized for the Intel® Celeron® M processor.

Here you can compare the 910gml chipset and 945 which is used by the core 2 duo.

http://compare.intel.com/pcc/showchart.aspx?mmID=22210,7419&familyID=7&culture=en-US

As you can see on the page there are key difrences between the chipsets other runs on ddr2, yours on ddr. the FSB support is 400 on yours and 533 / 667 on the 945.

also you can see the supported processor familys right there.

you can look for a
Intel® Celeron® M processor,
Intel® Celeron® M processor Ultra Low Voltage (ULV)

Upgrade cpu with maximum FSB of 400MHz
