Question about Maytag Atlantis MAV6000 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Dead mav6000 it was making quite a bit of squeaking in the spin cycle before it died. it quit in the middle of a rinse cycle and smells of something burnt other than rubber. i had read about the brake snubber? going bad and maybe having to replace but didnt know it would lead to total failure. Guess Ill drain the tub while waiting for an answer on how to proceed.

This is my experience repairing the maytag washer Atlantis mav series 9750 aww, I had to replace the spin bearing since it was making a jet engine noise when it was spinning out the water. its not an easy job for my 1st time taking this machine apart, you literally take it all apart to get to this bearing, but now I can show how to do it with pictures making it easier for you to do it. even if you have to replace something other than the spin bearing, this how to tutorial will show you how to get to most of the parts in this machine, parts are not that expensive, 50-80for bearing kit, here is my site on how to do it http://maytagwasherrepair.googlepages.com/index.html

take the belt off and let me know if you still smell burning
next with the belt off turn each pulley under the washer there are 3
the big one in the middle...in one direction makes the unit agetate in the other releases the break and the basket turns.. does this happen?
next the pulley to the right is your pump how is that does it sound strange when you turn it?
next spin your motor pulley does it spin freely?
let me know what you find

Maytag washer makes loud grinding noise during the spin cycle

if it's making a noise then either your drain pump bearing is going out or your thrust bearing is going out (assuming the noise happens in both spin and wash). Tip the washer backwards so that you can get underneath of it. Take the belt off and spin the pump pulley on the right side. This should spin effortlessly.

The middle pulley is the trustbearing pulley. Spin this--- one direction it should have a little bit of resistance--- the other should have more resistance

The washer quits at rinse and spin dry cycle

I've had the same experience with my Speed Queen washer. Approached the accredited Speed Queen agents for assistance, when tech support was deployed to diagnose the problem.
In the end, I was told that the "timer" went bust. So the wash cycle seems to work 100%, but when it comes to rinse and spin the contacts on the timer don't make contact, and the motor waits in anticipation for it's next command, and that the high pitch noise heard.

Maytag Atlantis shut down during rinse cycle.

Contacted a local repair shop. They told me that if I got it spinning again, the motor was most likely ok. It is protected by a thermal switch that turns it off when it begins to overheat. The smell was to be expected as it was overheating; the difficutly restarting was because it hadn't cooled off enough yet. We have now used it a few times for small loads. Still getting a smell, but the wash cycle is completing ok.

The loud squeak at the end of the spin cycle is usually attributed to a worn snubber ring and/or brake assembly. You cannot lubricate the snubber to get rid of the noise. In fact, you may damage the washer if you do. A small amount of corn starch can be sprinkled under the bottom tub support where the snubber ring is to get rid of most noise related problems (this will be the bottom round plate where it meets the casing of the machine). A worn snubber will also cause some vibration or out of balance problems. The brake tends to glaze over after it has become worn and will squeak or cause sudden jerking (causing movement of the washer) went the spin cycle stops. I would recommend replacing the following parts:

Brake Stator: 1057484 Price: $7.45
Brake Rotor and Lining: 1032674 Price: $16.70
Snubber: 1055142 Price: $4.35
Brake Removal Kit: 997909 Price: $99.40*

*Brake removal tool is required in order to remove the brake assembly and/or to replace the snubber. There is a 200lbs spring located under the Brake Stator that must be compressed PRIOR to removal or you could cause injury to yourself. NOTE: There should be a warning label explaining this

You can find all your parts and information at repairclinic.com. Just type in your model number in the search menu.

The parts required to make the repairs aren't very expensive, but the tool required to do it can be a bit pricey. If you've never worked on this type of washer before, this is not a job that I would recommended to the average do-it-yourselfer. Maytag is real good about providing the necessary instructions with their parts, however.

In summary this job involves the following steps:

1. Removal of the front case to access the washer interior.
2. Removal of the drive belt and pulley from underneath the washer.
3. Removal of the drain hoses from the wash tub.
4. I usually remove the entire wash tub with transmission still installed at this point and place it upside down outside the washer for ease of accessing everything. (There are other methods, but I find this one easier).
5. This is where the brake compression tool will be required to remove the brake rotor, stator and snubber ring.

Now, I am summarizing this job quite a bit. If this is something you wish to try to repair yourself, and you need more instructions, let me know. I hope this helps you.
