If all the icons are selected, hit the 'start' button, and that should unselect them. Did you select all the icons by hitting the CTRL + A buttons by mistake?

You must have selected a different windows theme. go to control panel, display (in xp) or personalize (in vista), and select a default theme, and the grey background should disappear.

How do i know which program has been selected

I think it would help if you were a bit more specific in your question. In most windows based operating systems, a selected application is indicated by the fact it is highlighted, but that does not necessarily mean it is running. You could drag a box around a set of Icons that could represent folders, photos, shortcuts, files or other things and then perform other operations, such as move/delete or execute/run/view depending on what the icon represents.

On a different system, just touching an icon may start an application.

So really the best answer is going to depend on the operating system you are using, and probably the hardware as well.
I post on behalf of HP.

If you want to hide your icons, right click on your desktop(your screen). A window will appear and put your pointer on view. Another window will open and at the bottom you will see "show desktop icons " with a check mark. Click on this and your icons will be hidden. To get them back do it again.

Start up and desktop icons missing

Hi,

This could happen due to various reasons like :
1. Any recent update done.
2) Virus infected
3) Windows missing/corrupted files.

There are several steps to resolve the issue.

Try one after another and check if that fixes the issue.

Step 1

Try this Fix
Click on the Download link and install the Fix No. 195 ( Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar )
Download Link

Step 2

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring Task Manager.
Click on New Task and type appwiz.cpl and click OK
This will re-run add/remove programs.
Remove/Uninstall all new program you installed before having this problem, Also remove the Windows XP Hotfix
Restart your PC.
The access to the taskbar , icons will all come back and Install a new Antivirus.

Step 3
If None of the above steps work, try a System Restore to previous date

Click START - All Programs - ACCSESSORIES - System Tool - System Restore
Choose the date before the system started giving trouble. ( The Date will be in bold ( highlighted ) which indicates the system can be restored to that date with all the settings on that date )

*Note : Doing system restore will uninstall any software/program you have installed from the date you choose the system restore till current date, However it will not delete any files created )

Hope this is helpful.

8 gb flashdrive by gigabank has malfunctioned. Is there any way I can retreve my data from it? or, repair it?

Yes, you should make sure its plugged into the USB port. Then Open My Computer by double clicking on it.
Look for your Flash Drive and double click on it.
When it opens you can highlight what ever you want to move and right click on one of the highlighted icons and click cut.
Then go back to My Computer and click on "C" drive and go to Documents. Then open the documents and right click and paste . That will move the data.
Hope that helps. Bud

No icons on computer

Try this:
  • right-click on the desktop
  • put your mouse over "Arrange Icons By" until it expands - in the expanded box there is an option that says "show desktop icons". If there is no check mark beside it, then your icons will be hidden. Just click on it and that should fix you up.
