If you are talking about a linksys router, the default password is admin, there is an article to set up the security features here:
http://www.cas411.com/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=68

If it's an other brand, let me know or check your documentation, it always tells you what's the default password.

What part of "let me know" don't you understand? In order to rate somebody, you need to give him/her all the information needed!

After installing Ubuntu I logged out. Now is asks for a user name and passwork but I did't set any. I asked for it to automaticaly log on. How dos I fix it?

In Ubuntu 9.04 click on the main icon and select Restart.

- If Ubuntu is the only operating system on your computer you'll need to tap the ESC key as the system boots.

- If you have a
dual boot or multiple-boot system the menu should appear on its own.

- At the root level you'll get a boot menu. Select the one that says "recovery mode" and press Enter.

- Ubuntu continues to load until you reach the Recovery Menu.

- Arrow down to "

netroot

" which states Drop to root shell prompt with networking and press Enter.

- Now, at the root type "

password username

" (where username is the account whose password you want to change) and press Enter.

- You'll be prompted to

enter a new password

.

- You will not see the password or any evidence that you are typing.

- Retype the password. If both passwords match you'll have successfully reset your password.

- Press Enter to continue booting into Ubuntu.

hope it helps

Both My Inspiron and linksys will not connect to my ISP. They say both are receiving an invalid IP address! I have used all trouble shooting techniques including trying to release and reset! Even went as...

Step 1: Plug the computer (ethernet wired) directly into the modem. Power cycle the modem and when all the light come on you should have internet. If not call your ISP to trouble shoot.

At this point we should be able to determine if it is a PPPoe connection (needs username and password to connect) or if it logs in automaticly.

Step 2: Plug the router back into the modem and the computer plugged wired (ethernet) to the router. Remove power from both the modem and the router. Plug the modem back in first, once all the lights are on plug in the router. Try to connect.

Step 3: Log in to the router via its IP address (normally 192.168.1.1), if no one has reset the user name password it should admin for both. If it has been reset, you will need to know what the user name and password are to continue.

Step 4: Under setup if in step 1 you found you needed PPPoe, then you need to set that under the setup tab. Make sure you use the user name and password provided to you by your ISP. If you dont need PPPoe then make sure this is set to obtain IP automaticly.

Step 5: save settings. Once the router restarts, try to connect again.

If these step do not work, let me know:

1. who is your ISP?
2. What modem do they use?
3. What is your IP address when plugged directly into the modem?
4. What is your IP address when plugged into the router?

I will be around for about 1 more hour, its 2PM central time now.

I want to change my network password

Hi

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Type the router's URL into your web browser. To access and change any settings on your router, you must log into the router's URL. This will allow your computer to communicate with the router and access the router's main page. When accessing the router's URL, use the same computer that was used to install the router. If you do not know the router's URL, look for this information in the router's manual or on the manufacturer's website. After entering the URL into the web browser's address bar, press "Enter" or click the "Go" button on the browser.
Input the router's default username and password. Once you enter the router's URL into your web browser, a dialog box will appear requiring you to input the router's username and password. (Note that this password is not the network password.) Unless you have previously changed the router's username and password, input the default ones. Many browsers have the default username of "admin" and have the password set as "password" or have no password at all. To find out your router's username and password, check the documentation that came with your router or check the manufacturer's website. Click "OK" to proceed to the router's main page.
Access the router's security settings. Depending on your brand of router, there will be tabs or links on the router's main page. One of these will contain the page for changing your security settings. Find and click the link or tab. This page will contain several textboxes, one of which will contain the SSID (name of the network) and two textboxes for changing the network password.
Select an encryption type and change the network password. Most new routers offer WEP (Wired Equivalency Privacy) security or WPA security. To create a password using letters and/or numbers, you must choose the WPA security setting. Change the network password by typing in a new password in the two textboxes. When you are finished, click "OK."
Save your changes and log out. After changing the network password, you must click "Save" or "Apply" to keep the password change. Log out of the router by clicking the "Logout" or "Exit" link on the router's main page. If you leave the main page open for a certain period of time, you may automatically be logged out of the router.

I cant get virgin netgear router to connect to my medion laptop, i get to the last part of the installation process when it says attempting to connect to newtork and it comes up move your connections...

Have you accessed and setup your wireless part of the modem?

To access the router settings menu, you will first need to log into the Wireless router following the steps below:
Open Internet Explorer
In the address bar type the following address:
192.168.0.1

You will be prompted to enter a Username and Password to access the interface, please use the following default details:
Username: This can be found on the bottom of the router
Password: This can be found on the bottom of the router

From the list on the left hand side, click on ‘Router Status’.
Within the Router Status section there are two areas you will be able to access:

Show Statistics
Connection Status

The Router Status page gives you a detailed status overview of the connection configured on the Wireless router.
Click ‘Connection Status’ to see more information on the broadband connection.
If you have already configured your broadband, you are able to establish/terminate the connection by clicking Connect/Disconnect.
You can also click ‘Show Statistics’ to show you current connection speed and more information on your Broadband connection.
Clicking on Basic Settings enables you to check all the Internet settings of your Broadband connection. Including the Login name (username) and password, IP address and type of connection.
Clicking on ‘Test’ will perform a standard check of your Internet connection and settings.
ADSL SETTINGS
The ‘ADSL Settings’ section provides you with some more information about your Internet connection. These are:
Multiplexing Method
VPI
VCI
WIRELESS SETTINGS
This section gives you full information regarding the Wireless connection. From here, you can change security settings, the SSID (Name) of the router and the access control list. Options list from:
Name(SSID) virgin broadband (default)
Region Europe(default)
Channel 11(default)
Mode g&b(default)
Enable Wireless Access point
Allow broadcast name
Security options (None, WEP and WPA)
- hope this helps

When I try to reinstall my router I can't get beyond the first step as the disk thinks our computer is not connected to the internet when it is. It convinces my computer that it is no longer connected....

Step 1: Turn off your computer, router, and disconnect the power to the modem.

Step 2: Connect one cable between the modem and the router's internet port

Step 3: Connect another cable between the router and the computer.

Step 4: Turn on the computer, then the router, then the modem - in that order.

Step 5: Now try running the setup disk.

Explanation: The modem has a security feature that disallows more than one device from connecting to it at one time. Once a specific device is connected, the modem expects that device to be connected at all times. If you unplug your computer from the modem and plug in the router without disconnecting the power to the modem, the connection will be rejected. This probably explains the reason for the error message you were receiving.

Furthermore, you do not need the installation disk in order to install your router. Open your browser and type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar. A username and password screen will appear, the default is usually admin/admin for both, but if that doesn't work just try admin in the password field. When you have successfully logged into the web utility, you will be able to alter the settings at your discretion. For the most part the router will work upon proper cable connections, however you will want to enable security features to prevent attackers from gaining access to your computer.
