I have a small Massey fan . I CAN'T get it apart so I can clean the inside. I tried every tool in order to get the screws out, nothing works. HELP !!! I really like them , this is my second one, the first one I puted in the garbage, cause i coul not clean it.
I have three of these fans, and my solution to you is simple and easy. Take the fan outside, get your garden hose, and wash it down from the front, top, bottom and back. Don't worry about the electrical parts, if you let it sit out in the sun all day, or overnight, it will dry and work like a charm.
If you can get the small screws off the front, even better yet, wash the fan as described above, and after it dries, spray some silicone spray right on the shaft of the motor. Turn the fan to face up so the silicone will ooze down through the other side of the shaft. Run the fan to blow away all the extra silicone. If you don't do it outside, and spray it and then bring it into the house and run it, you'll get silicone all over your furniture.
Run the fan about five minutes, replace screws, wipe any access silicone down, and you are ready to use. Do not use regular oil like 2 in 1, because this oil will attract dirt and cause the fan to run noisy and rough with the dirt stuck to it.
Finally, don't wait for your fan to get noisy or slow, when you see a lot of dust building up on the front grill, its time to take your fan outside and wash it down. If the dust is left on there, your fan wont blow air through the dust and will not be efficient. It will also start to build up dirt on the motor shaft.
Remember, after you wash the fan, be sure its dry before bringing it into the house and starting it. Electric shock is unforgiving, but once the fan is dry, its good for a few months.
I had just fixed this particular Massey fan here's what i did:
1. I took out the screws in the back with a Phillips screwdriver on this fan there are 6.
2. Once i took out the 6 screws, I took off the screws near where the knob of the fan is, there are 4, two holding the red and black wire and the other two securing the knob mechanism to the white fat wires, there is a clamp on the fat white and the black ground wire near this mechanism please do not mix up these wires, when you are finished with the wires please place them back in its correct position, on the back of the fan there is a slot where the cord goes through.
3. The 2 screws on the fan mechanism are bolts they have nuts on the back of the mechanism, but the other 2 screws that secure the back of the fan to the mechanism underneath the other 2 screws you can take out and the mechanism will come off.
4. Once you have taken off the screws to the back of the fan you can clean all necessary parts, also the fan blades themselves there is a clamp that you can pry off, but be careful because one of the lips that the clamp sits on can fall off, if it does, just take some dollar tree glue gel (the green pack) and use that to repair the lip/s on the fan blades.
5. Once you complete all the cleaning, for detailed cleaning use cotton swabs to clean the fan mechanism you do not want to put water on the mechanism, however you can clean the front, the back, and the fan blades independently.
6. Once everything dries, make sure you know exactly where everything was or take a picture before you begin to take parts off so you will know how the fan was wired, please remember the fat wire and the ground goes into that clear white clip, to open the clip just use pliers, once you have the wires in there clamp them to secure.
7. Once you have everything cleaned and screwed back together, plug in your fan and hope everything goes well. Thank You.
Hi, I just read this today and have the same problem. Looks like if the fan is painted, the screws are stuck tight. To avoid throwing the fan away, I used a wire cutter and cut a few of the wires of the grill away, just enough to stick my hand in. I cut ones on the bottom of the fan only! I don't recommend this if you have kids or pets that may knock over the fan while it is running as the blade goes fast enough to cause an injury.
All of us having this problem, let's find and write the company or the distributer (mine was Wal Mart) to ask them to do a better job making these fans!
Huh I thought water wasn't good on electrical parts including fans??
