I have acer aspire 3000. My screen goes blank with flashing hyphen in left upper corner after bios screen. I cannot reboot because it goes to blank screen.

It means that the HDD is not getting detected on the computer.
Try resetting BIOS.
If that doesnt help, check whether your HDD is bad.

Black blank screen Lenovo 3000 N100

You say the laptop all of a sudden flashed off.

How old is the laptop? You may have suffered one of two things? First of all, if the hard drive will not boot back up, even after using the recovery discs, then that would explain it powering off. I have seen this happen on old desktop hard drives.

Next, try to get the transformer or adapter tested. It may not be putting out enough amperage to run the laptop.

Monitor turns off

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but in common with all computers there are a few things that could cause the symptoms you describe.

A heat build up can cause that to happen - like a laptop computer that cannot draw in air from underneath because it is resting on a desk/carpet .. air vents on the base of a laptop/computer should be kept clear. Ideally, laptops should be on a holding stand that allows an air gap underneath.

However, you say that it is only the screen that goes blank - the computer is still powered up. This suggests one of two things.

There may be a fault in the video circuitry (the card or chip) which 'throws' the display every now and then. It could also be faulty/failing RAM which, depending on what you are doing at the time, can cause the exact same symptom.

Just to confuse matters even more, a faulty or failing power unit can cause the same symptoms, though admittedly, it would be unlikely that your computer would remain powered up whenever the fault occurs.

Take the easiest first .. search for 'Free windows registry repair 1.2' and install it. Use it to scan the computer for registry faults and then click on 'fix errors'. If there are any registry faults causing the problem .. hopefully they will be fixed.

If you can, remove your RAM - the memory modules - from your computer and take them to a computing shop where they can be tested. Alternatively, can you borrow similar RAM from a friend and install it in your pC to try and re-create the fault? If you do this and the fault doesn't reappear - you know you have faulty RAM.

It's difficult fixing a computer and identifying faults unless you have it there in front of you. I would suspect the RAM. Take it out and have it checked.

Screen turns blank all of sudden and works normal after switching of the system for 1 hr or so.

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:
  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

ADVENT KC550P Lap Top scren

the pc is standing at command prompt, which means it is unable to find the boot.ini file required to boot into windows

When you say you pressed F8 did you keep pressing it until you got a menu saying Safe Mode, last known good configuration, start in VGA mode etc, if so use last known good configuration and let it reboot.

If still nothing then you will need the windows cd to perform a system repair.
