I get an error message on Canon i960 printer that tells me the waste ink tank full. How can I empty this myself?

Read it all here.
Scroll about half the page, to:
WASTE TANK ALMOST FULL or FULL ERROR MESSAGE PROBLEMThere is explained how to get rid of the error message very easy, and how to clean the waste ink pad manually. The latter seems not to be necessary, though.

Where is the waste ink tank -how do i clean or empty it

Since you didn't even specify the printer I am going to be real generic here. The waste ink tank is below the parking position of the print heads. unless you are really lucky and have a printer that should have died years ago you will never hav to empty it out or clean it. The are designed to hold the equivalent of several complete ink cartridges and are also allowed to dry out leaving only a residue.
I hope this answers your question.

Waste tank near full

Hi
The waste ink take is actually just a felt pad that sits under the printer mechanism inside the case and absorbs the ink from your cleanings

Try this:
1 Power off printer
2 Hold RESUME button then press and hold POWER. (The beeper MAY sound once, or may not depending on your model.)
3 Hold POWER and Release RESUME.
4 Press RESUME twice then release both POWER and RESUME buttons.
5 When the indicator lights steady, press RESUME 4 times (for the S900, 3 times for the 8200 apparently).
6 Press power to set data.
7 Print away!

Let me know if that didnt solve your problem

Ink replacement fault

Did you use Lexmark brand cartridges? Sounds like the printer can't read the chip in the cartridge. Try cleaning the contact pads behind the cartridges and in the carriage with the eraser on a pencil.
